Monterey Park Shooting and the Man Who Saved Lives

Citizen saved others in Alhambra

Alhambra, California: On Saturday night, suspect Huu Can Tran opened fire inside a Monterey Park Dance Hall, killing 10 and wounding 10 others. The celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year was taking place in the mostly Asian area. But when Tran left the scene of his carnage and went to another Dance Hall in Alhambra, he was confronted by a citizen who wrestled the gun away from him. That citizen, Brandon Tsay, Sheriff Robert Luna refers to as a hero.

The Monterey Park shooting occurred at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio during their Star night that was held between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. All 10 of the people killed were over 50, according to authorities. The suspect fled the scene and went to Alhambra, California and walked into the Lai Lai Dance studio.

“It was Chinese New Years. We were hosting a social dance party. I was in the lobby, it was late into the evening, most of our customers already left. I wasn’t paying attention to the front door, I was looking into the dance ballroom, the dance floor. This is when I heard the sound of the front door creaking closing, instantly followed by the sound of a metal object clinking together as if they were rubbing. That is when I turned around and saw there was an Asian man holding a gun. My first thought was ‘I was going to die here, this was it…

“This is when he started prepping the weapon and something came over me, I realized I needed to get the weapon away from him, I needed to take this weapon, disarm him or else everybody would have died.

“When I got the courage, I lunged at him with both my hands, grabbed the weapon and we had a struggle. We struggled into the lobby trying to get this gun away from each other. He was hitting me across the face, bashing the back of my head. I was trying to use my elbows to separate the gun away from him, creating some distance.”  Brandon Tsay

Tsay was ultimately able to disarm the suspect, and eventually the man left after Tsay demanded he leave. When police arrived, Tsay still had the suspect’s weapon in his hand.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Gun control failure

Authorities are still trying to figure out how Tran obtained the semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine. He had another handgun inside his white van. Tran was found inside his van on Sunday in Torrance, CA, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapon he used is illegal in the State of California. How’d that happen? The answer is that people with criminal tendencies do not obey the law…such laws tend to leave portions of America defenseless. Tran reportedly was quick to anger, although the exact motive may have been personal relationship related, according to the Mayor of Monterey Park.

So, a 72-year-old Asian man decided to kill Asian folks in an Asian community. Definitely not White Supremacists.

Fortunately for the people in the Lai Lai Dance Hall, Mr. Tsay summoned the courage to confront the shooter before he did any more harm.
