Mobile County Sheriff’s Captain Fired Over Support of 2nd Amendment

In 2018, Shane Springer (R-Citronelle) was elected to the Alabama State legislature. At the time, he was the Chief of Police in Satsuma, AL. Before that, he was Chief of Police in his home town of Citronelle, AL. After his election, he resigned from the Satsuma Police and received an appointment to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office as a Captain. Now he has been fired because he supports legislation for Constitutional Carry…and the Sheriff does not.

Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran is reportedly a Republican, and so is Shane Springer. But the two do not see eye to eye on the 2nd Amendment, and Constitutional Carry in particular. Springer has supported not only Constitutional Carry (HB 618), but legislation to ban agencies from enforcing unconstitutional Federal firearms laws. The AL legislature is set to vote Monday on HB 618. Sheriff Cochran sees it differently, so he removed Shane Springer from the force.

“Sheriff Sam Cochran made the decisions Wednesday, May 12, because of different political views held by his administration,” spokeswoman Lori Myles said.

Myles later told AL.com that Stringer’s sponsorship of legislation supportive of constitutional carry ran afoul of the Sheriff’s views on the issue. Stringer has also backed legislation forbidding state and local law enforcement agencies from enforcing new federal gun laws or executive orders, which has been a concern among law enforcement personnel as well.

Springer issued a statement which reads in part:

The Second Amendment gun rights of Alabamians are under attack from a liberal federal government that is out of control and even from some factions right here at home. After dedicating my life and career to law enforcement, losing a job because I stand in support of Alabama gun owners is certainly surprising, but nothing will discourage me from defending the constitutional guarantees promised to all of us as American citizens.

The U.S. Constitution does not say you have a right to keep and bear arms as long as you pay what amounts to a gun tax in the form of permit fees. It says you have the right to keep and carry firearms… period.

Shane Springer statement

Legislators willing to stand for the Constitution are often difficult to find because they are elected officials, as are most Sheriffs. Those who are constitutionally minded are men or women who will stand firmly on the side of their constituents over the political climate of the day. former Mobile county Captain Shane Springer posted on Facebook that he and his family will have to make some hard decisions in the next few days. We wish him well, and thank him for standing up for the people of Alabama.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
