State Representative Gary Eisen, a Republican, introduced Michigan bills in the state legislature back in August that would make both cities and businesses liable for injuries on their property if their ‘gun free zone’ should be targeted by a shooter.
Rep Eisen called the zones “killing zones.” The two Michigan bills, one, HB 4975 removes governmental immunity from liability for any shooting in a gun free zone. The other, HB 4976 holds governments or private zone owners liable for the safety of any persons on their premises. Perhaps being hit in the pocketbook would assist in changing the idea of “gun free zones.”
“I have to presume that no one will have a gun inside and I will be safe. They are telling me, ‘Don’t worry, Mr. Eisen, this is a gun-free zone. You’ll be perfectly safe in here.’ We know that is not the case. If they don’t want to be liable, then don’t put the sign in the window.” Gary Eisen
Businesses might have to hire additional security, or allow law-abiding citizens who enter to be armed.

Eisen said part of the rationale for his bill lies with a report that 98% of mass public shootings happen in gun-free zones…
...The Washington Post said the figure comes from the Crime Prevention Research Center’s updated 2014 report. That report stated that 98.4 percent of mass shootings from 1950 to July 10, 2016, happened in gun-free zones.
“We call them killing zones, not gun-free zones,” Eisen said.”
Gun Free Zones are simply an advertisement to killers that says “victims inside.” Some schools across the country have taken steps to remove the gun free zone signs in an effort to protect their children. Some have posted that their staff is armed. But it’s not just schools that need the signs removed- government buildings and private properties have them as well. It’s an open invitation to those with the intent on doing harm to others.
