As American Family Association (AFA) Boycott Target Pledge closes in with nearly 1.2 million signatures, false reports have being circulated on Facebook and by liberal media outlets that AFA has “encouraged men” to go into women’s changing areas or bathrooms at Target retail stores, AFA has reported.

AFA began the pledge petition calling for a boycott of Target after the retail giant said it would allow men to use the women’s restrooms and dressing rooms in their stores and vice-versa for women.

Target stated on its website, “We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. …Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

Now, AFA is reporting that falsehoods are being spread around that is misleading and Tim Wildmon, responded in an editorial written up on USA Today that explains the reasons for the boycott.

Wildmon stated in part, “The vast majority of people are uncomfortable using the bathroom while a stranger of the opposite sex is present. Most people understand the potential danger inherent in allowing men access to women and children in a private setting — where harassment, voyeurism or even abuse, can occur.”

Wildmon noted that Dr. Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist, explained that such use of the bathroom would set up a precedent in which anyone can be anyone and we can alter history if we feel like it

Two examples that Ablow presented include, if a 25-year-old man maintains that his maturity level and sense of self make him a 13-year-old, should he be allowed to be involved sexually with “other 13-year-olds”? Another example would be that if one applied to law school as an African-American, would he/she be given any preference that is allowed a minority applicant?

Ablow stated, “See, if we believe that transgender individuals must use the restrooms they choose, one could argue that many of our cultural institutions must flex away from fact… and one could argue that cultural chaos will result.”

Taking those examples and explanation by Ablow, Wildmon stated, “We believe a very large percentage of the country agrees with us. In one week alone, more than 1 million people have signed the pledge to boycott Target over this issue. This is unprecedented for AFA.”

“A simple solution to this controversy for Target is gender-specific facilities (men’s bathrooms/fitting rooms, women’s bathrooms/fitting rooms) would be maintained, and a single-occupancy, unisex option would be provided for the transgendered community, “said Wildmon.

“Well, evidently there are consumers who want to make a point, too. If Bruce Springsteen can boycott North Carolina, moms and dads can boycott Target.”
