Liberals, never-Trumpers freak out, spread fake news after Roy Moore says something in Russian

On Saturday, the left-wing Guardian published an interview with Judge Roy Moore which included some questions about Russian President Vladimir Putin.  At the end of the interview, Moore is asked what he would say to Putin, prompting the judge to say, “hello, how are you” in Russian.  Naturally liberals and never-Trumpers freaked out on Twitter and began pushing the false idea that Moore is either a Russian or a Russian agent.

This was a fairly familiar theme, but as usual, was taken way out of context.  Additionally, detractors conveniently left out Moore’s statement in the Guardian interview.  We emphasized the key phrase below:

“I studied Russian at one time,” he says, laughing, “at the United States military academy at West Point. And that’s about all I could say to him.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Hardly “fluent” Russian, but that’s what detractors are spreading.

This from a person who obviously can’t spell “speaks.”

Moore had more to say in the interview.  According to the Guardian:

Trump has nonetheless spoken favourably of Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin. What, Moore is asked in the Guardian video, would the great Republican president Ronald Reagan think of such proximity between an American president and his Russian counterpart?

“You know,” Moore says, “one thing I’ve learned in politics is not to think for somebody else. And to suss what Ronald Reagan would think, I just couldn’t simply begin.”

Told that Reagan said Russia was the focus of evil in the modern world, Moore answers: “You could say that very well about America, couldn’t you? Well, we promote a lot of bad things, you know?”

Asked for an example, he says: “Same-sex marriage.”

“To the suggestion “that’s the very argument that Vladimir Putin makes” about same-sex marriage, Moore tells Lewis: “Well, then maybe Putin is right. Maybe he’s more akin to me than I know.”

Moore makes a good point.  Consider some of the insanity that has been pushed on Americans over the last eight years.  Same-sex marriage, men in women’s restrooms, putting people in jail for using a pronoun…  And the list goes on and on.

To suggest that Roy Moore is a Russian agent because he said something in Putin’s native language is, simply put, weapons-grade stupid.  But it’s the kind of desperate stupidity we’ve come to expect from the Trump-haters on both sides of the political aisle.

Exit question: How long will it be before Maxine Waters calls Moore a Russian?

On a final note, yours truly spoke with Rabbi Eric Walker about the Roy Moore election last Monday morning. You can catch that video below:
