Liberals, media set stage for shooting of GOP Rep. Steve Scalise

On Wednesday, the nation was shocked with news that 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, a liberal who volunteered for Vermont socialist Bernie Sanders, opened fire on Republicans practicing for a charity baseball game, wounding several, including Rep. Steve Scalise.  Fortunately, Scalise’s security detail was on hand and Hodgkinson was stopped before he could commit mass murder.  Hodgkinson is the one who pulled the trigger, but let’s be clear — his actions did not take place in a vacuum.  While he is responsible for what he did, radical leftists and their media masters set the stage for this attempted murder.

Let me explain.  As I’ve documented time and again since February 2011, liberals have proven that theirs is an ideology of rage and hate.  Individual liberals like Virginia’s Mike Dickinson, for example, once said he was okay with the extermination of five million NRA members, and allegedly responsible media pundits continually fan the flames of hate with false claims and innuendo against President Trump and elected Republicans.

There are many, many examples, far too many to list here, but the situation has only gotten worse since the 2016 election.  Do a search on Twitter using the term, “kill Trump,” and you’re certain to be hit with tweet after tweet from unhinged Trump-haters advocating the president’s murder:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

This guy, for example, says that he’s “freelanced for CBS, AXS, Yahoo, Examiner, and more” and now reviews games, tech, fashion and travel.  Granted, he’s talking about a game, but still…

Then there was this from Adam Pally:

There’s plenty more, but you get the point.

Then there’s Kathy Griffin, whose idea of “comedy” was to be photographed holding a facsimile of Trump’s bloody severed head.  And let’s not forget a performance of “Julius Caesar” in which a Trump-like character is brutally murdered.  CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, by the way, called it a masterpiece.

On Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh explained that Hodgkinson was radicalized by the media and the Democrats, noting:

You can’t continue to enrage people the way the left, and predominantly the media, has been doing. The Democrat Party and the left for years have been feeding this. And particularly since the election of Trump they have virtually assured their supporters that Trump is guilty, guilty of treason. And every congressional hearing is going to provide the proof. Every one. Sessions yesterday, Comey a couple of times, Sally Yates, you name it.

They build up these expectations that Trump is not really the president. He shouldn’t have been. He cheated. He colluded with the Russians. There isn’t any evidence for it, and so every time the left builds up an event where this is going to be established as fact and it blows up in their faces, it creates rising expectations followed immediately by rank disappointment and anger and letdown over the fact that it’s not happening.

And I think these people on the left have been driven to this extreme for quite a while. I have been worried about it for I don’t know how long. And I’ve been telling you so. And we could, if we wanted to, we could scour — well, we have. I could go back and show you tweets, I could read you tweets. I could read you statements made by elected Democrats and others promoting just this kind of behavior, just this kind of behavior. You can find it. If you look at the TV programs and the media personalities that this guy, Hodgkinson, was devoted to, you’ll find out how radicalized he was by left-wing TV and comedy.

The bottom line is this:  The radical left — including the Democrat Party — and the left-wing media is to blame for radicalizing Hodgkinson to the point of attempted mass murder.

That’s right, liberals, YOU built this and you own it.

Naturally, liberals want to dismiss the underlying cause and don’t want to be faced with the idea that their own rhetoric is to blame for what set this guy off.  Consider this tweet we received earlier Wednesday in response to another article:

Got that?  According to this person, we’re not patriotic for reporting that the shooter supported Sanders and called the president a “traitor.”  Sorry, but this man engaged in a partisan attack and attempted to murder as many Republicans as he could.  If the shooter were a Tea Party supporter who tried to murder Democrats, liberals across the country would be screaming it from the rooftops.

Then there are those who actually seemed happy that Republicans were attacked, as Chris Collins reported earlier.  Some even expressed dismay that Trump wasn’t shot.

“This guy is probably typical,” Limbaugh further said. “Not that there’s going to be rampant shootings, but he just happened to go over the edge and pull the trigger. But he, to me, is exactly what I am unfortunately worried about when I look at the way all of these lies and all these nothingness, nothing burger stories have now been out there for month after month after month.”

Trump addressed the shooting and called for unity:

“We may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country. We can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans, that our children deserve to grow up in a nation of safety and peace and we are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good. Please take a moment today to cherish those you love, and always remember those who serve and keep us safe. God bless them all, God bless you, and God bless America. Thank you.”

Liberals and conservatives can’t agree on much of anything these days, but if we can’t learn to agree to disagree agreeably, then we’re finished as a nation and a civilized society.

Writing at the Daily Wire, Ben Shapiro put it this way:

The Left has maintained for years that Right-wing rhetoric is responsible for everything from the Oklahoma City bombing to the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords. If we use their own standard that rhetoric is responsible for violence, then the hard Left has something to answer for here.

It’s time for the left — including the media — to dial it back a notch.  Otherwise, we’ll certainly see more Hodgkinsons come out of the woodwork.
