Liberal Democrat House members are calling on Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to prohibit members of Congress from carrying guns anywhere on Capitol Hill, and incoming freshman Lauren Boebert of Colorado thinks this effort is aimed squarely at her.
Representing Colorado’s western slope Third District beginning next month, Boebert made waves recently by announcing she wanted to carry her Glock pistol while walking to and from the Capitol, for personal protection. Anti-gun Democrats don’t want that to happen.
Boebert, in a telephone interview, observed, “This letter asking for members to be disarmed…comes from the same party that wants to defund our police officers.”
She quickly added, “I do believe there is a connection here with how vocal I;ve been about defending our rights. They know I’m coming here to secure the rights of the American people.”
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Boebert asserted there are Democrats who carry on Capitol grounds and who have concealed carry permits. This is possible under an obscure regulation that allows members of Congress to be armed, while the general public cannot bring guns onto the Capitol grounds, according to The Hill.
“This is not a partisan issue,” she stated.
Boebert became famous as the owner of a restaurant in the town of Rifle, Colo., for openly carrying a pistol while she was working. Her staff did likewise, earning international publicity for the establishment.
She also famously drove across the mountains to attend a rally for anti-gun former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke to tell him face-to-face, “Hell no, you’re not taking our guns.”
“I’d like to be armed as often as I can,” she said, recalling a deadly incident in July 1998 when a gunman entered the Capitol building, and fatally shot two Capitol Police officers before he was wounded and taken into custody. That killer, Russell Eugene Weston, Jr. remains confined in a mental institution.
Boebert said she would be “absolutely willing to disarm” and leave her pistol in a cloakroom outside the House chamber. She will be circulating a letter to House colleagues about the gun issue.
Writing for The Hill, reporter Mike Lillis repeatedly referred to anti-gunners as “gun reformers.” He included President-elect Joe Biden as a “gun reform advocate.”
Second Amendment activists call this “camo-speak” because in reality, gun reform translates to gun control or prohibition. Biden has been a gun control advocate since he arrived on Capitol Hill nearly 50 years ago.
