On Sunday, staffers of Arizona GOP Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake received two parcels that contained white powder at her campaign office in Phoenix. Those who were exposed are being monitored by medical personnel, and so far are doing fine. Our previous report is here. But it’s a sad commentary on how dangerous it is to run for office in today’s political world.
“But listen, we’re in dangerous times. This is not the first time we’ve been threatened. I’ve been threatened many times. Our tires have been slashed. We’ve had screws drilled into our tires so that our tires would blow out while we’re on the road. We are living in dangerous times, and that’s why we need to elect somebody who’s strong and a fighter and not a coward. We’ll get to the bottom of this. I really don’t want to get too far ahead of it.” Kari Lake (R)
The letter enclosed in the first parcel contained “a bunch of vulgarities and ranting and raving about Kari” as well as the white powder. (Daily Mail) The staffers noticed a second parcel that was identical to the first, so did not open that one. Police sent samples of the powder to a local lab rather than Quantico so that the results could be established sooner. “Suspicious white powder” has been used to describe a possible Anthrax attack since 9-11-2001. However, most of them over the last few years have been harmless substances, though some of them were not.
Kari Lake’s opponent, Democrat Katie Hobbs’ campaign headquarters was burglarized last week on Tuesday, and (as usual) she attempted to lay the blame on Kari Lake. It turned out to be an illegal alien named Daniel Mota Dos, who had numerous prior criminal charges. He is suspected of being the one who committed the break-in – and was caught on surveillance video. The Hobbs campaign didn’t issue an apology, but did condemn the white powder incident at Lake’s campaign headquarters. But it is indicative of the political violence that targets anyone running for office.
Political candidates have long been victims of various crimes, but it seems to have grown deeper in this cycle. The extreme rhetoric used to paint Republican political opponents as dangerous is threatening to create major destruction to the American way of life. The white powder at the campaign headquarters of Kari Lake is only one example. As candidate Lake put it, anyone running for political office has to be a fighter and not a coward. There are unstable people in nearly every corner these days.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
