Indiana – Terre Haute Detective Killed Near Federal Building

Terre Haute Detective Greg Ferency served his city for 30 years, and was a member of an FBI Task Force for 11 of those years. At around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, he was shot to death by a man in a gold or silver Ford F-150 as he was outside the Federal Building. Investigators are calling the shooting an “ambush.” The suspect is in custody at a local hospital.
Im in Terre Haute where the community has come together to honor Detective Greg Ferency. Ferency was a 30-year veteran on the Terre Haute Police Department & was on the FBI task force for the last 11 years. The suspect was identified as Shane Meehan, 44, who reportedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the Federal building prior to the fatal shooting of the Terre Haute detective. The motive for his attack is unknown, as he was taken into surgery on Wednesday. Because Detective Ferency was on Federal Property at the time of the shooting, the FBI will take the lead in the investigation.
FBI Task Force Officer Greg Ferency was ambushed and fatally shot at the FBI Indianapolis Resident Agency in Terre Haute. TFO Ferency was a 30-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department and had been a federal task force officer since 2010. We want to extend our deepest sympathy to TFO Ferency’s family, friends and fellow officers. An FBI agent shot and wounded the suspect who is currently in custody receiving medical attention at a local hospital. The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division. The review process is thorough and objective and is conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances.
FBI S.A.C. Paul Keenan
Meehan was taken into surgery Wednesday afternoon, his condition on Thursday is unknown. Police K9’s searched his vehicle and other vehicles in the parking lot of the Federal building.
It’s not a good time to be a police officer in America, but this is an example of someone who would die for a person who hates who they are.
Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter
The only thing we do know at this point is that the suspect killed a beloved police detective who served for many years. Terre Haute has lost 3 police officers to violence over the last 10 years.
Rest In Peace Detective Ferency #129. You are sorely missed, however, we are thankful for our time with you. Please say hello to #208 and #196 for us. Until we meet again…
