Did a Good Guy with a Gun Avert a Nightclub Massacre?

A crowd was standing outside the Playoffz Nightclub in Lyman, South Carolina on Sunday morning. A man got into an argument with someone at around 3:30 a.m., and pulled out a gun. He began firing, striking 3 people and nearly striking a 4th. But that 4th one was a concealed carry permit holder.

The 4th man drew his gun and shot the suspect in the leg. The suspect was arrested the next day after interviews and surveillance footage were reviewed. None of the injuries were life threatening.

WISTV reported,

Deputies said 32-year-old Jody Ray Thompson pulled out a gun after getting  into an argument with another man and fired several rounds toward a crowd that had gathered out in front of the club.

“His rounds struck 3 victims, and almost struck a fourth victim, who in self-defense, pulled his own weapon and fired, striking Thompson in the leg,” Lt. Kevin Bobo said.

Bobo said the man who shot Thompson has a valid concealed weapons permit, cooperated with investigators, and won’t be facing any charges.

“Thompson was still on the scene when deputies arrived, but the initial scene was chaotic,” Bobo said. “It wasn’t until victims and witnesses were interviewed, and video from the scene was reviewed that Thompson was identified as the suspect.”

Thompson was charged four counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Good guys with guns

Yet again, we have another case of a good guy with a gun stopping an incident that could have escalated into mass murder. Training for use of weapons has skyrocketed since the Orlando shootings, and Pink Pistols in particular has experienced a significant increase in membership.

The father of one of the Orlando victims said this:

“The killer was armed and his helpless victims were not, yet the anti gun politicians still want to disarm the populace, enabling these scenarios. It is likely such attacks will continue, until the victims start shooting back. That’s the lesson I take from this, for what it’s worth. When the shooting started Saturday night, I’ll bet there wasn’t a person in the club who wouldn’t have traded everything he owned in the world, for a loaded gun.” Mark Bando, Father of victim Christopher Andrew Leinonen
