Jewish traditions are often lost on us Gentile folks, so suffice it to say that Passover began on April 12 and concludes today, Saturday April 19. Why do we care? There are “pictures” of Christianity hidden within the Passover story of which you may or may not be aware. And this Sunday, April 20 is the Western celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. What’s it all about? Let’s dive in:
The Passover story begins with God’s commandment to require each Jewish family to sacrifice a perfect lamb or baby goat and spread its blood on the doorposts of their dwellings. If they did not have a lamb or goat, they were allowed to join with another family for the sacrifice. The act would cover their families from the angel of death, which visited Egypt and killed their firstborn. It also signifies the Exodus of Jews from Egypt, from slavery to freedom.
We all know about Jesus’ sacrifice being the “Paschal Lamb” who was slain for all of us. Jesus is the perfect lamb, the firstborn of God: a lamb or kid in the Passover account is the perfect offspring of the sheep. The Son of God is a reference to “offspring” – the perfect offspring of God. It is His Blood that keeps us from spiritual death and gives us freedom to be His Beloved children. We pass from death to life the moment we give our hearts to Jesus. His Blood is our Passover. (Note: Orthodox Jews who don’t believe in the New Testament will argue this point, but the allegories in the Bible are clear).
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
We are all on a spiritual journey from the death of our slavery to sin to the freedom of Christ. Death has no “sting” when you know that you belong to the God who created you. He welcomes all who will come into His extended family. No matter what you may experience on this messed-up earth, no matter how much the political landscape may change or even frustrate you, knowing that You are loved by Christ this Easter is worth all the gold in the universe. Happy Easter!
On this earth, we will have tragedy and disappointments, but know this—God is real, and He loves you!
