Fresno State prof. who said Trump must hang won’t be teaching this fall — Report

On Sunday, the Daily Caller reported that Lars Maischak, the Fresno State professor who said that President Donald Trump “must hang” won’t be returning to teach this fall.

According to the Daily Caller:

California State University, Fresno President Joseph Castro announced that history professor Lars Maischak would not be returning to teach at the school in the fall semester, according to The Los Angeles Times. But while the professor will not be returning to campus, his contract does not expire until May 2018, and he is tasked with converting 2 courses into online formats.

“Has anyone started soliciting money and design drafts for a monument honoring the Trump assassin, yet?” Maischak asked in another since-deleted statement, first reported by The Daily Caller News Foundation in April.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“Dr. Lars Maischak, Fresno State History lecturer, will not be teaching this fall,” said Castro in a Friday statement. “In accordance with California State University, Fresno’s contractual obligation, Dr. Maischak has been assigned to convert two courses to an online format which meets his unit requirement per the faculty collective bargaining unit agreement.”

The school president mentioned that the two courses will meet the Quality of Online Learning and Teaching Standards set forth by California State University. Maischak’s “contractual assignment” finishes December 20, 2017 and his contract expires in May 2018.

The Associated Press report further said: “Far-right websites such as Breitbart News highlighted the tweet, sparking angry calls on social media for the professor to be fired.”

Got that little bit of bias?  “Far-right” sites?  We thoroughly covered this incident and found people on all sides of the political spectrum who disagreed with what Maischak wrote, which went much further than what the mainstream media told you.

“Maischak is more than naive if he thought he could post ‘to save American democracy, Trump must hang. The sooner and the higher, the better’ and have those words disappear into the ether,” said Fresno Bee editorial page editor Bill McEwen.  Is the Fresno Bee now a “far-right” publication?  Apparently so, according to the AP.

“One doesn’t talk about killing a president, he said, even in the abstract — regardless of one’s politics or the party occupying the White House,” McEwen added.

As we observed:

Maischak has said that his words were taken out of context, but, McEwen said, that complaint “doesn’t wash because there is no other context to words suggesting that America benefits from assassination. Such words cross the line and can’t be spun into something else.”

McEwen further said:

Furthermore, other Maischak tweets establish that he’s no shrinking violet who made one mistake. People commenting on The Bee’s first story about Maischalk’s tweet being the subject of a Breitbart News article pointed to other inflammatory tweets. Among them:

▪  #TheResistance #ethniccleansing Justice = The execution of two Republicans for each deported immigrant.

▪ #TheResistance Has anyone started soliciting money and design drafts for a monument honoring the Trump assassin, yet?

There’s many other tweets as we noted here and here.  Sadly, Maischak’s Twitter feed is no longer available to the public.  It’s not known if he voluntarily deleted it, but as the saying goes, the Internet is forever, and an archived version of it can still be seen here.

We further said:

Let’s put this in perspective.  Maischak isn’t your garden-variety leftist wandering the streets of Fresno nor is he a teenager issuing tweets from his mother’s basement.  As a teacher, he has perhaps the most sober responsibility one can have next to raising a child.

The school also has a duty to provide a safe environment for all students regardless of religious or political points of view, and would be derelict in its duty if it fails to discipline this teacher.

That’s why I started this change.org petition asking Fresno State to fire Maischak.
