The EPA has given away an American city with over 10,000 residents. Just like that. No appeal and no recourse. And to sweeten the deal they threw in 1 million acres of land.
This took place in 2014 and the state has taken the case to court. No progress has been made. If it comes out the EPA’s way, homeowners can be moved out without compensation.
Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes had applied for a “Treatment as a State” status that would turn Riverton and the one million acres into tribal land. To everyone’s surprise, the EPA granted it, overturning legislation from 1905, which had settled the boundaries of the Indian tribe.
