FDA Issued Emergency Use Authorization for Anti-Malarial Drug in Treatment for COVID-19

Late Sunday, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the use of the anti-malarial drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to be used for treatment of COVID-19. The HHS is now accepting the drugs in the national stockpile of medications to treat the virus.

Trump touted the possibility of the two drugs helping in the fight against COVID-19. In their normal Trump-hate, numerous outlets piled on, condemning his statement as uneducated and foolish, and leading to extreme damage. But as more and more information comes to light about tests on real COVID-19 patients, he may be proven correct yet again. Though it is early in the trials for the drugs, and the results of New York’s trials are not yet known, any therapeutic method that helps is important to note. The FDA issued the EUA in light of those “anecdotal” situations.
The President said Sunday, “Let’s see how it works. It may. It may not.”
The national stockpile is now accepting the drugs in accordance with the action that the FDA issued. The HHS released a statement that read in part:
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today accepted 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate donated by Sandoz, the Novartis generics and biosimilars division, and one million doses of chloroquine phosphate donated by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, for possible use in treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19 or for use in clinical trials. These and other companies may donate additional doses, and companies have ramped up production to provide additional supplies of the medication to the commercial market.
France officially sanctioned the use of the drugs after 78 of 80 patients treated with the drugs recovered within 5 days.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
France 24 English wrote,
The French government has officially sanctioned prescriptions of chloroquine to treat certain coronavirus patients. In the United States, President Donald Trump has also been touting the use of chloroquine and two other anti-malaria drugs to fight the virus. Speaking about chloroquine, Jérôme Salomon, France’s director general of health, said: “This ensures continued treatment of patients who have been treated for several years for a chronic condition with this drug, but also allows a temporary authorization to allow certain patients with coronavirus to benefit from this therapeutic route.”
The Daily Wire noted,
“The move comes after infectious diseases specialist Didier Raoult announced new clinical results, which can be accessed here, that show 78 out of 80 patients treated with chloroquine recovered within five days, reported Trustnodes.
The five-day recovery time is “considerably” faster “than the usual 14 days and for some it can go up to 28 days if they recover at all,” the outlet highlighted.”
At least two Democrat governors, Nevada and Michigan, had blocked the use of the drug entirely, saying their “medical experts” didn’t think it was wise. The Michigan governor actually threatened doctors and pharmacists over prescribing or filling any prescriptions for the drugs.
Hoarding the drugs is a problem, but dying from the disease is a worse problem. We hope the governors who decided to listen to Trump-hating “experts” will change their minds and adjust their emergency orders to allow patients in their states to have access to the treatments.
