Dem. Sen. Mark Kelly Asked About Big Tech Censorship To Prevent A Run On Banks

During a Sunday afternoon Zoom meeting regarding the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., asked if there was a program in place to censor information on social media to prevent a run on banks.

“Just got off of a zoom meeting with Fed, Treasury, FDIC, House, and Senate. A Democrat Senator essentially asked whether there was a program in place to censor information on social media that could lead to a run on the banks,” Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said.

When asked what the response was, he replied, “We will get back to you on that.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The Democrat Senator was later identified as Mark Kelly of Arizona.

Michael Shellenberger reported:

During a conference call about the Silicon Valley Bank bailout yesterday, Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) asked representatives from the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, and the Federal Deposit and Insurance Corporation (FDIC) if they had a way to censor information on social media to prevent a run on the banks, according to Republican members of the House of Representatives who were on the call.

The members said there were roughly 200 people on the Zoom call, including Senators, House members, and staff members from both parties. “On our conference call, led by [Senate President Chuck] Schumer, with Fed, FDIC, and Treasury, a democrat senator asked the three agencies if there was a program underway on social media to censor information that would lead to a bank run,” Rep. Thomas Massie told Public.

“I believe he couched it in a concern that foreign actors would be doing this,” said Massie, “but he didn’t suggest the censorship should be limited to foreigners or to things that were untrue. The people from the three agencies couldn’t answer him and just sort of took a pass on the question.”

Shellenberger also reported that lying Democrats falsely accused Republicans of advocating censorship when they did  not (Emphasis added):

Democrats say Republicans are also calling for censorship.

A spokesperson for the Senate Banking Committee pointed Public to a statement by House Banking Chairman Patrick McHenry (R-NC) as the only one they knew about that mentions social media.

“This was the first Twitter-fueled bank run,” said McHenry. “At this time, it is important to remain levelheaded and look at the facts—not speculation—when assessing the right path forward.”

But McHenry did not call for censorship, and his spokesperson told Public that he “in no way is advocating social media be muzzled.”

The response to this on social media was predictable:

It sure seems that way.

Heh…

They’re Democrats, so that oath doesn’t apply to them. At least that’s the way it appears.

Along with every other Democrat.

It sure seems that way, doesn’t it?

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., observed that the Biden Regime once again committed to work with Big Tech fascists to go after Constitutionally-protected free speech:

On a briefing with Biden Under Secretary of the Treasury Nellie Liang regarding the SVB BAILOUT they are working towards and a member asked if they were reaching out to Facebook and Twitter to monitor misinformation and “bad actors.” And this administration AGAIN just committed the federal government to interfere with free speech. Unacceptable!

Breitbart added:

Massie told Public that Kelly framed his request for online censorship as a tool to limit foreign actors’ communications. He said, “I believe [Kelly] couched it in a concern that foreign actors would be doing this,” said Massie. “But he didn’t suggest the censorship should be limited to foreigners or to things that were untrue. The people from the three agencies couldn’t answer him and just sort of took a pass on the question.”

Public contextualized “Kelly’s call for censorship” as coming “at a time of growing demands from Democrats for more censorship by social media companies.” It concluded by emphasizing broad Democrat hostility to the First Amendment and broader value of free speech and expression. It inquired, “Why is that? Why are Democrats suddenly at war with the First Amendment? What exactly is going on?”

I can answer that question very succinctly.  The sad truth is that these days, the only real difference between modern liberal Democrats and the tyrants who ruled Nazi Germany and the former Soviet Union is… native language.
