A May 20, 2023 letter sent to Congressional leaders from 160 retired flag officers warned that “DEI” is a danger to the US Military. They stated that all DEI initiatives must be removed from the 2024 NDAA in order to regain the ethos of warfighting within the ranks of service members (SM in the letter). The letter was revealed to SOFREP by one of the signatories, retired General Don Bolduc.
As an example: General Bolduc served his country for 36 years in the US Army. During that time, he served as “combined joint special operations component commander in Afghanistan, deputy director for U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) and worked for Special Operations Command-Africa (COMSOCAFRICA). He has received five Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.” (Army Times) He also ran for the Senate in New Hampshire, but was unsuccessful. He is but one of the honorable signatories of the letter from 160 retired flag officers.
Too bad that the “powers that be” routinely ignore such letters of warning, and most media do not report it.
“One Team, One Fight”
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Hundreds of retired flag officers have sent letters of warning to the leaders of Congress over the course of the last few years, and this one is no different. Has anyone heeded the warnings? No. This letter has especially serious warnings against DEI, a practice which stokes distrust and division rather than its promised “diversity, equity, and inclusion.” The letter reminds leadership of the Marxist roots of the DEI ideology.
“The domestic cultural threat has an innocuous name: “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI). But, in reality DEI is dividing, not uniting, our military and society. DEI’s principles derive from critical race theory, which is rooted in cultural Marxism, where people are grouped into identity classes (typically by race), labeled as “oppressed” or “oppressors,” and pitted against each other. Under the guise of DEI, some people are selected for career-enhancing opportunities and advancement based on preferences given to identity groups based on race, gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, etc.” Excerpt from letter
The letter calls for a return to “meritocracy,” or choosing service members for their abilities, not identity. The signatories state flatly that the continued practice of DEI is destroying the fabric of the US military. They no longer “just see green,” but now are oriented toward personal identity rather than a cohesive fighting unit. While we can all acknowledge that there has been discrimination within the ranks of the US military, the path forward in this world of historic dangers must be filled with a strong sense of unity…something which DEI totally destroys.
The letter states that the focus on gender identity and race will ultimately be the practice that eliminates the readiness of the Armed Forces. Those 160 retired flag officers know only too well the potential for disaster.
“We have fought for our Nation and are sounding the alarm that DEI poses a grave danger to our military warfighting ethos and is degrading warfighting readiness. Social engineering, commonly called “wokeism,” has no place in our military. China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are not distracted by DEI programs; no doubt they are watching us. Equal opportunity and merit-based performance have been battle tested for generations and proven essential for success. DEI policies and practices must be eliminated from the DoD to protect our critical warfighting readiness.” Closing statement from letter
