News reports say that the suspect entered the Palms Motel in downtown Darwin and went room to room, shooting at each one. The injured woman was shot there, and one person died at the Motel.
The suspect killed three others in Darwin, one at the Gardens Hill Crescent, The Buff Club, and Jolly Street. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that there was another crime scene at Peter Macauley Centre, which is a “major police operations base” – but did not elaborate on the nature of that scene.

The suspect was released on parole in January of this year. He used a pump action shotgun in the carnage. Police have ruled out terrorism, saying it was one individual with whom they are well acquainted. The police reportedly negotiated with the suspect to bring him to officers.
The suspect’s car was recovered. Police are working to put together the sequence of events for the incident.
In Australia, a person must have a license to own a firearm, and they must not be a “prohibited person.” Self defense is not among the criteria for obtaining a firearm license. There are many gun owners in Australia, but a convicted felon is not among the legal ones.
