Dallas Homeowner Shoots Burglar, Goes Back To Bed
Dallas homeowner James Michael Meyer, 72, is charged with murder after allegedly shooting a burglar then going back to bed. (Dallas Morning News). But there is a lot more to that story.
Mr. Meyer heard a noise at about 5 a.m. on September 26. He got up to look out the window, and saw a man using a pick ax in an attempt to break into his shed.
He grabbed his gun, ran outside, and shouted at the man to stop, and that he would shoot him if he came any closer. According to the Dallas homeowner, the suspect began advancing toward him.
Mr. Meyer fired, and the man dropped the pick ax and ran. Then Meyer fired another round “into the night” as the man fled and went back to bed. The Dallas homeowner told police he didn’t know if either of the rounds hit the man.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Approximately two hours later, Meyer said he got up and looked outside in a nearby park. He saw a “black bag” lying there and went over to check it out. It was the body of the suspect.
Before calling 911, Meyer’s wife called an attorney to ask what to do. Meyer didn’t call police until around 7 a.m. and then reportedly refused to answer the dispatcher’s questions, just repeating that he was the victim and they needed medical..
EMTs who responded said the blood was dry when they arrived, so the body had been there for “a period of time.” The suspect apparently died from a gunshot wound to the back of the neck.
When officers couldn’t locate any spent shell casings at the scene, they learned that Meyer claimed to have dumped them in the trash prior to their arrival. (Blue Lives Matter)
He was arrested for murder and booked into the Dallas County jail, on a $150,000 bond. He was no longer in custody on Sunday ( USA Today).
There are several moments of poor judgment, the first one being that if the suspect was running away, that deletes the imminent danger aspect. The probable cause affidavit stated that the “threat of serious bodily injury against him was over when the complainant dropped the pick ax and ran off.”
When Meyer went back to bed without calling 911, then dumped the evidence…those things gave an appearance of guilt. Calling an attorney prior to 911 also didn’t help.
Meyer told police he “chambered a round” in his gun. One round, yet neighbors said they heard three shots. Meyer himself stated he shot two times, once before the man fled, and once “into the night.” So there are discrepancies with his story.
