CNN Op-Ed Compares Itself to the Military as Protectors of Freedom

A CNN op-ed by Notre Dame Professor Joseph Holt that appeared to compare the Press to the US military started a firestorm. Comparing  the Press to the military who give their lives for our freedoms was a huge mistake.

“Far from being the enemy of the people, the press at its best is like a guardian angel that caringly and capably protects us from harm…We thank soldiers for their service because they devote themselves to protecting our freedoms, and we should. But we should also thank the media for the same reason — especially when the stakes have never been higher.” Joseph Holt

Catch the nastiness in “the stakes have never been higher?”  It’s that attitude that led to President Trump’s election. And the press is not currently “at its best.”

The article was entitled: “The Press isn’t the Enemy, it’s the Protector.” It was aimed directly at Trump’s statement that the press is the “enemy of the people.” The issue boils down to the fact that a “free press” actually IS essential for a free people (our 1st Amendment). But in the current nasty political climate, media outlets like CNN, MSNBC,  etc,  seem to deliberately make things up to fit their extremely antagonistic view of President Trump.

Holt defended CNN’s temper tantrum king Jim Acosta and his snit over Press Sec Sanders’ refusal to answer a question. He also defended Kaitlin Collins whom the White House staff banned from a White House Event recently.

“At the conclusion of a press event in the Oval Office, a reporter shouted questions and refused to leave despite repeatedly being asked to do so…Subsequently, our staff informed her she was not welcome to participate in the next event, but made clear that any other journalist from her network could attend.” Sarah Sanders

It wasn’t just her “inappropriate questions,” it was that she refused to leave when asked. CNN’s Acosta always asks “inappropriate questions.” A level of respectful behavior is expected of reporters, but CNN especially has a habit of being obnoxious.

It’s the fake news and belligerence that has made them the enemy, not the idea of a free press.

Holt tweeted the link to his article and people did not seem to appreciate it. Here is his original tweet:
