Chula Vista Charter School Mural Sparks Controversy
Sasha Andrade painted a mural behind a Chula Vista Charter school that showed President Trump’s bloody, severed head on a spear held by an Aztec warrior. The school communicated with the artist and she reportedly agreed to alter the work. They covered the mural with a black tarp, and by Wednesday it was covered with plywood with a car parked in front of it, according to the San Diego Tribune.
“We understand that there was a mural painted at the event this past weekend that does not align with our school’s philosophy of non-violence. We have been in communication with the artist — who has agreed to modify the artwork — to better align with the school’s philosophy.” (Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee) MAAC Community Charter School director Tommy Ramirez
Sasha Andrade was defiant in her Facebook post, so whether she will actually “rework” her painting is unclear. It was for was an art event called “Battlegroundz” in which artists in the community are invited to come and paint on the wall behind the school. It occurs the last weekend in April and is part of a yearly scholarship fundraising project.
The local school district received numerous calls about the mural, but the school is not run by the school district. Many of the residents were disturbed by the painting, according to the Daily Caller. Questions have been raised as to whether the charter school administration approved the content of the mural prior to her painting it.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
