San Francisco voters took a scrub brush to Progressive DA Chesa Boudin in Tuesday’s recall election by a large margin. The recall results were a hopeful sign for those who are seekng to get rid of Los Angeles Progressive DA George Gascón. But let’s not hold our breath – San Francisco Mayor London Breed is now charged with finding an interim DA for the November election. Her politics aren’t much different than Boudin’s.
“I want to be very clear about what happened tonight. The right-wing billionaires outspent us 3 to 1. They exploited an environment in which people are appropriately upset. And they created an electoral dynamic where we were literally shadowboxing. Voters were not asked to choose between criminal justice reform and something else. They were given an opportunity to voice their frustration and their outrage and they took that opportunity.”

Instead of taking responsibility for his policies, he chose to blame “right wing billionaires.” His former campaign manager blamed “conservative money.” In reality, there was no justice whatsoever for crime victims in San Francisco under his tenure. He was elected in 2019, and since then he has eliminated cash bail, stopped prosecution for “quality of life” crimes such as public urination, and put fewer people in jail. How did those things workout for the citizens of San Francisco?
Lack of prosecution for misdemeanor crimes has put an enormous burden on business owners in San Francisco. The constant “smash and grab” robberies have been a high profile blight on the city. Failure to prosecute any of the smaller misdemeanors or find an alternatives to handle them has allowed the homeless population to grow. Needles and feces litter the streets in downtown SF. And while it’s sad that there are homeless people, not putting at least a modicum of consequences for the rules they need to follow has had disastrous consequences. “Reimagining” the justice system would have some benefit, if it weren’t for lax policies that refuse to do anything about the rising crime.
Raj Marwari, 40, who lives in the Marina District and works in finance, said he voted to recall Boudin because “obviously, things have gotten worse in every way,” including homelessness. He said he is embarrassed when his parents from Texas visit the city.
“Safe is not a word I’d use to describe San Francisco,” Marwari said. Removing Boudin from office won’t solve everything, he said, but “when the player’s doing bad, you’ve got to pull ’em.”

During Boudin’s 2½-year tenure as San Francisco’s top prosecutor, he has refused to seek the death penalty or try juveniles as adults. He has significantly reduced the use of sentencing enhancements. A San Francisco police officer stood trial for excessive force this year for the first time, though the officer, Terrance Stangle, was acquitted.

His father, David Gilbert, a former member of the left-wing extremist Weather Underground group, spent 40 years in prison for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery charges before being granted parole last year.
His mother, Kathy Boudin, who was also a member of Weather Underground, spent more than 20 years in prison before being released in 2003. Boudin was raised by left-wing activist Bill Ayers, who was a co-founder of Weather Underground
Progressives view criminals as victims of society… but they are primarily the victimizers. It falls to prosecutors to be able to determine strong solutions that keep the citizens safe. The states pass sentencing enhancements for a reason: to keep bad guys off the street. The election revealed that the perception of voters was that Chesa Boudin didn’t care about the citizens of San Francisco.
