Boy Scouts of America Changes Its Name For Parts of the Organization

The Scout Logo

As we previously reported in October of 2017, the Boy Scouts of America has admitted girls. As of today, Wednesday, May 2, the organization has also changed its iconic name to just “Scouts” (although its formal name will be Scouts, BSA). Only the 11-17 program changed its name, according to information we received.

Update: we received a note from a member of the organization:

“No we did not change the name of the organization, just the 11-17 program. It is not coed but single gender dens and troops with all the same requirements as before. The media has done a great disservice by misrepresenting what this actually is. It is a full positive step for our programs and the decision came from the volunteers like me, not from high up. Girls were already working alongside in cubs but not getting the recognition, and girl scouts doesn’t offer what many want in many troops. We are filling a need.

Also units do not have to take girls… many are choosing to remain all boys. It’s up to the Charter organization whether they are going to do the new program or not. In fact in our area many have decided not to and a few are going to get all the girls.

Another point was that this decision was sent to the volunteers. They did a presentation to us last year in all councils that was open to all volunteers where they showed us where they were wanting to go with this program. They gave us a vote as to whether we agreed and wanted to continue or to stop and kill it. The vote Nationwide was over 78% in favor.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The organization is attempting to create an organization that is “more modern” by allowing anyone to join, including transgender individuals, according to USA Today.  There will likely be social issues with that idea, just as there have been in the US Military with co-ed groups.

Famous names:

Scouts have been leadership building since it began in 1910. Let’s look at some of the leaders whose names we would find familiar (unless you’re very young, then you’ll have to look these up on Google).

Harrison Ford reached the rank of Life Scout, just one step below Eagle Scout. Steven Spielberg the movie director was an Eagle Scout. Jimmy Buffet once said that he became a “pretty good medic” while he was in Scouting. Baseball great Hank Aaron made it to Life Scout. Singer and TV show host John Tesh earned his Eagle Scout rank.  Henry Fonda earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Jimmy Stewart was also involved with the Boy Scouts, as was John Wayne, and Andy Griffith. Ozzie Nelson earned his Eagle Scout rank as well. Dirty Jobs star Mike Rowe also earned his Eagle Scout rank. Journalist Walter Cronkite, Astronaut Neil Armstrong, and Astronaut James Lovell earned their Eagle Scout ranks. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin earned his Tenderfoot rank. Donald Rumsfeld earned his Eagle Scout rank as well.

President John F Kennedy was the first President who was a Boy Scout, and achived his Star scout rank. Gerald Ford earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was the first Vice President involved in scouting.

“Modern” Scouting

When the “social justice movement” began, the Boy Scouts came under fire for their ethics, their mention of God (“for God and country”), and being only for boys. They were forced to end their ban on gay leaders in 2015.

Girl Scouts, another exceptional organization, has taken a hit as girls bail on one group to join the other. But all is not necessarily roses for young girls in the presence of boys. According to the Backpacker,

“A study commissioned by the group found that members were more likely to have a stronger sense of self, positive values, healthy tendencies, and an interest in STEM learning when compared to non-member girls and boys.”

As both organizations have been shrinking in this politically correct age, we’ll have to see what happens.
