Biden ‘unity’ bid may crash into wall of ‘bitter partisanship’

The Wall Street Journal on Friday is suggesting incoming President-elect Joe Biden’s highly-publicized promise to “unify America” is about to hit several speed bumps.

Their headline and teaser subhead says it all: “Joe Biden Vows to Unify America. That Job Has Become Dramatically Harder.

“The president-elect will start his term faced with the historic challenges of Covid-19 and a struggling economy, at the same time as a Trump impeachment trial and bitter partisanship and anger across the country.”

That may just be for starters. He is also coming into office after having alienated possibly one-third of the population that owns firearms; the vast Second Amendment community to whom he has never been friendly, much less a friend.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The Second Amendment Foundation announced Friday it will extend and expand its national advertising campaign aimed at recruiting members to the “2nd Amendment First Responder” program to invigorate the grassroots gun rights movement. In a sharply-worded announcement, SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb called Biden’s gun control plan “extremist.”

“Biden and (Kamala) Harris have been alarmingly clear about their gun control and confiscation plans,” Gottlieb said. “Biden wants to regulate and tax popular firearms and their magazines under the National Firearms Act, or mandate they be turned in through a so-called ‘gun buyback’ program that amounts to compensated confiscation. Our campaign is alerting the nation about the extremist Biden-Harris agenda.”

The 60-second spot aired 40 times over the past week on nearly a dozen networks. In the second week, the effort will expand to 13 networks and channels and air 79 times, Gottlieb said.

It’s not just gun owners who are on the defensive. The chasm opening up between Capitol Hill Democrats and Republicans is getting even wider. As reported by Fox News, “More than 30 House Democrats signed a letter suggesting several Republican colleagues may have aided Capitol rioters by providing them with tours of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 5 but have yet to flesh out their accusations, following inquiries from Fox News.”

Democrats seem to have a problem with unverified allegations. They spent some two years trying to impeach Donald Trump on what were found to be phony allegations of Russian collusion.

If it is unity Biden is looking for, he may have a hard time finding it.
