Austin Mayor Steve Adler Falls Asleep During Funeral of Police Officer

Austin is in Texas, but it’s definitely not “red”- its Democrat Mayor, Steve Adler, has been a vocal supporter of defunding the police. To prove it, he intermittently fell asleep during the funeral for Austin Police Officer Anthony “Tony” Martin who died in a motorcycle crash on September 23 while on his way home after working the night shift. On top of it, only one Austin City Council member bothered to attend the service.

“This service wasn’t just a check list for us. It was the honor & respect of a man who has served his country and community his WHOLE life. My family needed to see him honored not [disrespected].  My husband, their father who doesn’t get to ever come home again, doesn’t get to go to SLEEP next to me EVER again, doesn’t get to RETIRE in four years from now, who doesn’t get to enjoy those golden years with me. I know he doesn’t mean anything to you but could you have at least pretended for just one hour.” Amberlee Martin, widow of Tony Martin

Officer Martin was a 20 year Air Force veteran who was only 4 years away from retirement at the Austin Police Department. He leaves behind a wife, 3 children, and one granddaughter. He started at the APD in 2006.

Austin Mayor Adler and the city council voted to slash $150 Million from the police budget in 2020. Texas lawmakers passed a law against defunding the police that restored $133 Million of it.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The response to the posting of the sleeping Austin Mayor was classic:

“This is what a real honest to goodness JERK looks like.” Vtr_Racing

“As I mother of an APD Officer I am continually offended by this man.” M. Rooney

“The BIGGER Story: Only 1 City Council member attended. Despicable, especially since they all just gave themselves a 40% raise.” P Ptoyka

“He’s a disgrace to Texas!” Bravojf

The Austin Mayor apologized for the episode, and reached out directly to Martin’s widow. The incident came at a time when disrespect against police officers is rampant across the nation. Adler claimed that the knowledge of Officer Martin’s death grieved him and touched his heart. Sleeping in the middle of a funeral service seems to contradict that statement. The APD has about 250 vacancies at the end of September, as the exodus from their department mirrors that of other agencies across the nation.
