On August 26, 2021, 13 service members lost their lives and 18 were wounded amid the chaos of the Afghanistan withdrawal wenn a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device. Were the 130,000 or so persons evacuated from Kabul worth the bloodshed? For the families of the service members who died? The opinions are mixed on that. The Afghans who got their ride were not all vetted and some dangerous people slipped through. All while leaving some Americans behind – some who are still there. But the 11 Marines, 1 Navy Corpsman, and 1 Army service member were called to duty, and they served to their last breath. It’s what they do, and why we should remember the Kabul 13.
Yesterday the US Marine Corps released a powerful video that reminds us of the sacrifices of our service members. It’s a reminder that woke politics and all the irrelevant rhetoric that goes with it fails at the feet of men and women who gave their “last full measure of devotion.”
On August 26, 2021, thirteen service members gave their last full measure of devotion at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Today, we remember their service and sacrifices, which enabled the evacuation of nearly 130,000 people out of Afghanistan.
