Apathy is a Vote for Corporate Woke Activism

In every election, there is always a candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot. That “candidate” is known as “Apathy” and it (Apathy does not identify as either male or female) has decided the outcome of countless elections. The voters who choose Apathy are the ones who don’t bother to cast a ballot. Many second-rate candidates have won elections only because their opponent’s supporters didn’t bother to show up at the polls.

In a similar vein, Apathy also influences the decisions that businesses make. When a business takes a largely unpopular political stance, it usually faces little risk that a majority of existing customers will stop purchasing its
products or services. Conversely, when customers decide to reject Apathy and “vote” by no longer patronizing a business, they send a loud and clear message. Obviously, that statement brings to mind the Bud Light debacle.

Bud Light’s predicament is unusual because as time goes on, the consumer boycott seems to grow more virulent. Typically, when a company “goes woke”, or takes a position that proves unpopular, any resulting uproar lasts for a week or so, and then it’s business as usual. Apparently, the threat of a short decline in sales wasn’t sufficient for Bud Light’s marketing “genius” who decided to double down on arrogance and stupidity. The brand’s former VP of Marketing Alissa Heinerscheid, the “brain” behind the campaign to use transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney to promote the beer, reacted to the backlash by stating her intention was to update the company’s “fratty” and “out of touch” humor.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

That comment can be taken as nothing less than an insult to existing Bud Light drinkers and is a factor in the continuing drop in sales. With no sunny skies and far fewer happy Bud Light drinkers on the horizon, parent
company Anheuser-Busch is buying back unsold cases of Bud Light (as expiration dates approach) from distributors.

The virility of the backlash to Heinerscheid’s decision to wrap a photo of a transgender influencer around a can of Bud Light is precedent setting. Bud Light isn’t the first brand to “go woke”. Maybelline (which is owned by
L’Oreal) has featured a transgender woman to promote its cosmetics, Target stores are offering LGBT items for children, and clothing from a transgender designer known for creating a shirt proclaiming, “Satan Respects Pronouns”, Adidas created an ad with a man wearing a women’s swimsuit to promote- you guessed it- women’s swim suits, Levi-Strauss has had various gender confused promotions for several years, Disney jumped on the LGBTQ bandwagon some time ago. The list goes on and on.

The question is, why does the management of so many corporations put its financial success at risk by making public pronouncements that are certain to offend a large portion of its customers? Certainly, some CEOs have
embraced the woke agenda, but it also appears that the pressure to go woke is coming from the investment/money management community in general, and from BlackRock, Inc in particular. BlackRock has over $10 billion in assets under management, and apparently, it isn’t shy about “suggesting” that companies play an active role in spearheading drives for DEI (diversity, equity inclusion) and dealing with climate change.

As is typical of wokeism, the “suggestions” typically take the form of demands. In other words, toe the line or pay the price. In many cases, a week’s slight reduction in sales is a much lower price to pay than the one
extracted by money and investment managers.

The only way to stop corporations from attempting to ram the tentacles of wokeism down the throats of the public is to increase the cost of doing so through boycotts. Revenue loss has to exceed the price extracted by the
investment community (or woke CEOs) before corporate management changes course.

Bud Light’s predicament is evidence of that. Although it appears the decision to feature a transgender influencer was made internally, the origin of the decision is irrelevant. The resulting drop in sales is the relevant factor.

Coercion

The issue at hand isn’t the LGBT community which is largely (but certainly not exclusively) focused on issues of equality and anti-discrimination. The issue is the woke activists who are attempting to force their agenda on the
world at large. Their demand is that the entire population embrace every aspect of the gay, lesbian and transgender lifestyle, personal philosophies and beliefs be damned.

The primary focus of wokesters appears to be an effort to legitimize gender transitioning. At this late date, many people don’t particularly care if a person is gay or lesbian and goes about his/her/their (select the pronoun of your choice) life without trying to force (insert pronoun choice) lifestyle on anyone else. However, the push to legitimize gender “reassignment” is igniting fireworks because of attempts to force acceptance of gender
swapping and promote it to children, even in the face of parental objections, or by hiding it from parents. (Here’s a late flash- if you were born a male, you can identify as female, and if you were born a female, you can identify as a male, but it’s all just pretend. Your DNA will always prove your true gender, and that’s the one with which you were born.)

Corporate promotion of the woke agenda is a powerful weapon in the war to force people to accept what they find objectionable. The time is long past for a resounding “vote” for that weapon to be disarmed.
