REPORTER: “You’re kind of the mother of the Green New Deal and what’s going on right now. The situation in Australia right now, what are your thoughts on everything going on there?”
OCASIO-CORTEZ: “Oh, I mean, it’s horrifying and I think it shows just how bad things can get once you have our environment tat gets dry enough to a point, hot enough to a point, fires that even — that would have started even as a ‘typical’ wildfire season fire, now starts to kind of add on to all of these compounding effects.”
REPORTER: “You, and Greta Thunberg too, generally young people taking a lead, what do you guys get about it being young as the old people aren’t getting right now?”
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
OCASIO-CORTEZ: “I mean, this is our future. Because I think for us the stakes are so high. I’m going to live in a world that is fundamentally altered by climate change. So is Greta, so is every young person. You know, if you are pretty much under the — first of all, we’re seeing it now. Like, we’re living through this right now. We’re experiencing it right now. But especially if you are under 50 years old, if you’re under 40, 30, you know, 20, the younger you are, the more of our lives and our futures are going to be impacted by this. And you know, even people my age are stressed and have anxiety about having kids just because we want to make sure that we’re bringing our kids into a healthy world, into a stable future. And you shouldn’t ever have to be anxious about that. We need to be advocating for a safe future for all of us.”
REPORTER: “What’s your message to the President? Does the President need to do something, to step up here?”
OCASIO-CORTEZ: “He needs to get his act together. He needs to stand up to the fossil fuel corporations and the fossil fuel industry. He needs to stand up to big oil, to big gas, but I think he’s in their pocket.”
