The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an agency few pay any attention to in the bureaucratic mashup that is DC. However, its recalls, safety programs, and oversight affect driving for millions of Americans. Ann Carlson reportedly withdrew her name as Biden’s nominee to head the auto safety agency. She served as its interim administrator from September 2022. And that was what sank her nomination: her advocacy for an extreme green agenda that demanded high energy prices to kill fossil fuels… and the hypocrisy of interests in a piece of the fossil fuel industry in the form of natural gas wells.
Her nomination was sent to the Senate on March 27, but her withdrawal as a nominee was sent to the Senate on May 30. The GOP members of the Senate Commerce committee penned a letter to her on May 1. At least 40 Oil and Gas Industry groups also opposed her nomination. She is well known for her “dedication” to addressing climate change (New York Post). The hypocrisy of her stance is only apparently part of what caused her nomination to be withdrawn, since the Biden administration has not stated why her name was removed.
“There is nothing in federal law that authorizes NHTSA to set fuel economy standards that effectively mandate the production of EVs in order to force gas-powered vehicles out of existence. Such an EV mandate would appear to violate the Supreme Court’s major questions doctrine as articulated in West Virginia v. EPA because using fuel economy standards to force automakers to electrify vehicles would have “vast economic and political significance” and thus require “clear congressional authorization.” NHTSA not only lacks such “clear congressional authorization,” it is specifically prohibited by federal law from considering the fuel economy of EVs when setting fuel-economy standards. Yet that is precisely what NHTSA did last year…

Note: fuel economy standards have little to do with automobile safety. But they do further an extremist environmental agenda.

Senate Republicans on the Senate Commerce Committee wrote to Carlson on May 1 regarding concerns that they had about her “past career” and her work at the NHTSA. Carlson, who is a University of California, Los Angeles, law professor, was named acting administrator of the NHTSA in September, according to a university announcement.
The lawmakers cited her support for fuel economy standards, which have prompted legal challenge, as a concern and alleged that her actions in the department mirror her “long career as an environmentalist without traffic safety experience.” They also allege her position in the NHTSA is “to advance” President Joe Biden’s “climate change agenda.” The Daily Caller
Pete Buttigieg sang her praises as being highly competent and dedicated in her post. However, her advocacy for the radical green agenda while holding interests in natural gas wells screamed louder than rhetoric. Ann Carlson isn’t the first Biden nominee to lose out on a leadership role and she likely won’t be the last.
