The verdict came down on Thursday night. It wasn’t until about twelve hours later, on Friday morning, that the world would find out what sentence would follow that guilty verdict.
Alex Murdaugh showed up on Friday morning in a prison jumpsuit rather than a suit jacket. That’s because, as of Thursday night’s jury decision, he stands before the court as a man whose guilt has been formally proven in a court of law.
Judge Clifton Newman read out the two charges with their sentences, one at a time, and made a surprising additional comment in reference to the second charge concerning Murdaugh’s son. The video is roughly a minute long.

Two life sentences. Consecutive. That is the sentence handed down for the murder of Murdaugh’s wife and son.
The twist came when the judge did not dismiss or deny any genuine love Alex had for his son. He only affirmed that, despite any love he had for his son, he had still been found guilty of his murder.
