A “Bunch of Dead Robots” – EVs or Their Charging Stations Aren’t Good in Subzero Temps

Dead batteries, frozen charging stations…Tesla owners came face up with one of the (many) serious drawbacks to EVs during the recent Arctic cold snap in Chicago. Why no one figured this out ahead of time is “unclear.” But it did cause long lines of cars at the charging stations. With no ability to charge them. One man called the cars a “bunch of dead robots.”

Electric vehicles may be the way of the future, but many EV owners are having trouble dealing with Chicago’s bitterly cold temperatures.

Public charging stations have turned into car graveyards over the past couple of days.

“Nothing. No juice. Still on zero percent,” said Tyler Beard, who has been trying to recharge his Tesla at an Oak Brook Tesla supercharging station since Sunday afternoon. “And this is like three hours being out here after being out here three hours yesterday.”

Beard was among the dozens of Tesla owners trying desperately to power up their cars at the Tesla supercharging station in Oak Brook. It was a scene mirrored with long lines and abandoned cars at scores of other charging stations around the Chicago area.” Fox 32

Electric vehicles aren’t super great in frigid weather, especially in the subzero spate that swept the nation recently. And people who let their batteries run down before trying to charge them ran into big problems. Frigid weather can cause gas powered vehicles problems too, but EVs are particularly susceptible.  According to Fox 32, owners need to “precondition” their batteries before charging to bring them up to a temperature that will make it work. Sounds like a royal pain. Not to mention the length of time required to do the charging.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

So we have EVs not good in water, since electricity and water don’t mix. They have problems in subzero temps because even the charging stations can freeze. They can catch fire (a raging, difficult-to-put-out kind of fire). The batteries are extremely costly to replace, and there’s nowhere to put them if you do.

I’ll keep my gas car, thanks.
