Yesterday’s Mayorkas Impeachment Attempt Failed… But Here’s What The ‘News’ ISN’T Telling You

At one point in the razor-thin decision, the vote to impeach Mayorkas was tied at 215-215, which would have failed. There was a fourth GOP ‘defector’ after the fact, which is actually BAD news for Mayorkas.

With Kevin McCarthy and George Santos no longer in the house, that already razor-thin margin for any motion has gotten even thinner. Yesterday, with a couple of GOP defectors, the margin was too narrow to pass the motion to impeach Mayorkas.

Three Republican No votes that killed the impeachment vote were Tom McClintock (CA), Ken Buck (CO), and Mike Gallagher (WI)

Ken Buck made no secret about this issue. Not sure about the other two.

The numbers looked like this.

Rep Scalise, a little occupied with his cancer treatment, was unavailable to cast his own vote in this proceeding, which would have pushed it into the ‘win’ column.

But there are many arcane procedural rules governing the house, including one that comes into play with this vote… and where a 4th ‘no’ vote comes into the mix.

In this case, someone who votes on the WINNING side of an issue has the right to file a motion to reconsider. If everyone supporting his impeachment had voted ‘yes’, none of them would have been eligible to file that particular motion.

But now that Blake Moore is on the ‘other’ side of this issue, he is eligible to file that motion.

Short answer: this fight is still FAR from over.

(And before you denounce Gallagher as a RINO, go find one of his interviews online (the Hugh Hewitt show, for example) where he explains that he thinks Mayorkas is an absolute disaster, votes with border hawks and against amnesty bills. He also understands that it’s going to pass next week without his vote. He just thinks this whole impeachment precedent is gonna set a precedent that could come back and bite us — and is opposed on the same grounds that he opposed the Trump impeachment.
