Wings Over Dallas Air Show Mid-air Collision

B-17 Flying Fortress and Bell P-63 Cobra Collided

A Bell P-63 Cobra collided with a B-17 Flying Fortress at the “Wings over Dallas” airshow on Saturday. The horrific accident was an obvious fatality, though it is unclear if any spectators were harmed in the incident. Videos surfaced on Twitter revealing the terrible nature of the collision and the debris that resulted. Six people were reportedly killed, according to the Daily Mail.

Correction: a pilot informed me that the B-17 was not the Stratofortess. Several news outlets claimed it wasm but the pilot told us that it was the B-29.  The B-17 was the Flying Fotress according to the New York Post. We have made the correction.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

How could this happen? Air shows are often the scenes of aircraft collisions, unfortunately. When several planes are in the air at the same time, it only takes one wrong move, one distraction to cause a disaster. The NTSB will investigate the crash and is currently in charge of the investigation.

“Tragic crash at the #WingsOverDallas airshow at Dallas Executive Airport (RBD) today. It appears a P63 Kingcobra crashed in to a B-17 while banking left. The B-17 was probably in the P63’s blindspot and didn’t see the B-17 ahead.” HW Helser on Twitter

Other pilots echoed the idea that the B-17 was likely in a blind spot and the P-63 probably didn’t see it. Although, as usual, at least one person thought it was “intentional.” Given the reality of air shows (which we all love to watch), it is likely a pilot error or accident. It is irrelevant at this point. What happened was a tragedy.

For those families of the pilots, as well as those who witnessed the disaster, the horror of watching someone die is tough on people. Our hearts go out to them.
