Why Musk’s Twitter Acquisition May Count for More Than We Know

Musk
Billionaire Elon Musk appears to have scored with the reported acceptance of his bid for Twitter. Conservatives are gleeful.

Conservatives taking to social media Monday cheering the announcement that Twitter has reportedly accepted the $44 billion offer from Elon Musk to take the company private may not fully realize what they have until the November election, if hoped-for reforms occur over the next six months.

The news came on a day when President Joe Biden’s popularity remains in the basement. According to Rasmussen’s Daily Presidential Tracking poll, the Delaware Democrat still has more people who “strongly disapprove” (47%) of his job performance than those who “strongly approve” (23%) and it’s been that way for weeks. Biden’s Presidential Approval Index rating has been stalled at minus-24 for days. It was down to -30 in mid-March.

According to Fox Business, Musk issued this statement:

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated. I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Self-appointed “progressives” may cringe at such an outlook, as they have been accused of deliberately trying to silence conservative voices for the past few years. Some posters on Facebook have been wondering whether former President Donald Trump’s Twitter account will be restored.

According to CNBC, “Some Republican lawmakers have expressed excitement at the prospect of Musk owning the company after complaining for years of what they say is censorship of conservative voices by mainstream tech companies. Twitter and others have said they do not censor speech based on ideology, but instead enforce their stated community guidelines.”

Musk’s acquisition could translate to looming trouble for Democrats, on a variety of fronts as the November mid-terms loom. However, Republicans are infamous for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, so anything happening on social media will need to be tempered.

However, there was some encouraging sign that things may be changing. Recently, Iowa’s senior Senator Charles Grassley sent a blistering letter to Biden, wondering when Democrats would accept blame for rising national crime rates due to their policies. References weren’t blocked, and a story appearing in Ammoland News added a new spotlight to the story, which other news outlets seemed to ignore.
