Why Hysterics over Alleged Toilet Paper Shortage During Coronavirus Pandemic Works Against Us

I’m not a medical doctor.  My job as an engineer is to help companies prepare their physical structure, their work programs, physical processes, and equipment… to minimize the impact of pandemics.

For example in 2003, as the SARS pandemic was picking up speed, I provided training seminars to major financial institutions on how to reduce risks with new non-medical steps, in addition to the medical steps they were taking at the time.

The New Toilet Paper Pandemic Hysteria

In medical matters, you should always follow the advice of your doctor and government health agencies.  Did any of them tell you to become hysterical about toilet paper?

In a pandemic, populations suffer in two very different ways.  One is related to the disease itself, which can be horrific and have many side effects.

The other area of suffering has to do with the partial collapse of the society and economy.

In the worst case, crimes like robbery, looting, riots and so on increase and become rampant.  They occur across all economic, race, creed, and color lines.  And that small percentage can wreak a lot of damage.

Unfortunately, the first steps along this path, is an idea: getting something needed to weather the storm, and to heck with anyone that gets in the way.

This we have witnessed for the last few weeks, with “paid looting” of toilet paper from shops.

“Paid looting” means that customers pay for what they take, but they try to empty the store of toilet paper as best as they can.  In some instances, like this one in Australia, violence has occurred over a roll of toilet paper.  Theft of toilet paper from public restrooms has been captured on video.

Focus is in these events on the toilet paper, and other things such as respect of others, go out the window.  Apparently even squirrels do it.

INSTEAD… BE CALM.

LISTEN TO THE PRESIDENT — HE’S RIGHT ABOUT THE NEED TO REMAIN CALM

The COVID-19 disease is bad enough.  We don’t want society to break down into disorder and violence.  The only way to make it through with optimal results, is by remaining CALM as a nation and as individuals.

Why we can be calm about toilet paper

Think about it for a moment.  If the supply of toilet paper breaks down, due to manufacturing/transportation  disruption… it’s almost certain the food supply will experience disruptions at the same time.

WHEN THERE’S NO TOILET PAPER, CHANCES ARE THERE’S NO FOOD EITHER.

And when there’s no food, we won’t need toilet paper.

Besides, as Forbes notes:

Currently, there’s no indication that lengthy quarantines will occur in the U.S. or many of the countries where the toilet paper stockpiling is occurring. There also doesn’t seem to be any evidence that toilet paper supply chains will be disrupted anytime soon. So it doesn’t seem necessary to make your bathroom look like this:

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S PROGRAMS ARE FOCUSED ON AVOIDING THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECTS OF A PANDEMIC AND ARE EXPERT IN DOING SO

Listen to your doctor and to national and state and local health authorities.  But in order to relax, get a few extra packs of toilet paper and let it go at that.  Just keep in mind that things will last longer in shops and be available if we self-regulate.
