A drone swarm LAST DECEMBER over Langley AFB has raised concerns after it was revealed that it lasted for TWO WEEKS. No one took evasive action, and the drones continued their mission unabated. Whatever that was.
Experts say that the drone swarm included around 12 drones, some of which were up to 20 feet in length, accompanied by smaller “quadcopters.” While the Pentagon is unsure of whether the incursion was done by “hobbyists,” other analysts maintain that it was likely a nation-state such as China or Russia. They also stated that the drones were possibly launched from a ship off the coast of the US. The Pentagon has not confirmed this.
Drone swam didn’t appear to have “hostile intent”
The Wall Street Journal reported last weekend that U.S. military personnel reported drones appearing in restricted airspace over Langley between December 6 and 23 last year.
Now, the Defense Department confirms it happened.
“Langley Air Force Base did experience incursions of unauthorized unmanned aerial systems last year in December 2023. The number of the UAS incursions did fluctuate on any given day, but they didn’t appear to exhibit any hostile intent,” said Sabrina Singh, Defense Department Deputy Press Secretary, during a news conference Tuesday at the Pentagon.
Singh was asked why the Air Force did not shoot down the drones.
“I do know with all these incursions, given that it is on U.S. soil, there is another level of coordination within the inner agencies that needs to take place. But the commander absolutely had his or her authority to engage any systems that are a threat to the base,” she said.” WVEC Norfolk, Virginia
Is this anything like a Chinese surveillance balloon? Airspace over Langley is restricted, and no one did anything. Or maybe they just smiled and waved as the drones flew over the base.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Langley AFB is the East coast home to the F-22 Raptor fleet and the Air Force Air Combat Command. It was an F-22 from Langley that shot down the Chinese spy balloon in Feb 2023.
Various US government assets, including NASA and other federal agencies, coordinated a response to the drones. This indicates a level of concern that suggests the drones were not simply hobbyist or commercially operated systems.
The repeated and persistent nature of drone swarm flights over a strategically important airbase highlights the evolving challenge drones present to both military and critical civilian infrastructure, as well as the need for effective countermeasures…
“To protect operational security, we do not discuss impacts to operations,” the statement added. “We don’t discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation. Langley continues to monitor our air space and work with local law enforcement and other federal agencies to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets.” Interesting engineering
Countermeasures such as protective nets over the aircraft are just one way to keep our assets safe. The Pentagon says they are “keeping a close eye on such incursions.” Drones can make it hazardous for any aircraft flights, which is only one reason why airspace is restricted over military bases.
Regardless of who launched the drone swarm over Langley AFB, shooting them down would have been the logical choice for deterrence. But the Biden administration seems to lack the spine to do anything aggressive.
How long before a drone swarm that carries explosives wreaks havoc at our military bases?
