Washington State: Travis Decker and the Hunt for a Monster

To be perfectly clear, this article was difficult to write. Thinking about three innocent children smothered to death by their own father is horrifying. How did they feel, as Travis Decker, 32, bound their hands and placed plastic bags over their heads? Knowing you’re about to die is one thing for an adult, it’s quite another for little girls ages 5, 8, and 9.

There is a manhunt currently for Travis Decker, who has extensive outdoor experience. He reportedly attended a survival training school for military members, having been a member of the Washington National Guard at one time. Chelan County has thousands of acres of inaccessible land. In other words, he could be anywhere.

His wife told authorities he has “borderline personality disorder.” The court-ordered visitation did not include custody, just visiting every other week. Decker has been living out of his truck.

A Chelan County sheriff’s deputy found the truck around 4 p.m. Monday at the Rock Island Campground in Leavenworth, Washington. They found all three girls’ bodies between 75 and 100 yards away, down an embankment, according to court documents.

Each one had a plastic bag over her head and “their wrists were also zip-tied or showed signs of being zip-tied,” according to the affidavit. Deputies found two bloody handprints on the pickup’s tailgate. 

Decker’s whereabouts remain unknown and he is charged with three counts each of aggravated first-degree murder and kidnapping. 

He is described as standing about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on both arms and was recently photographed with a goatee and mustache.  Fox

Note: the “bloody handprints” may indicate something worse than mere smothering. The little girls likely fought against the terror.

Washington authorities are pulling out all the stops to find Travis Decker. From the State Patrol to county and local agencies, they are trying to find this madman. The agencies did not issue an amber alert for this case due to the “criteria” not being met. Blame is foolish. Decker alone is responsible for these little lives being lost.
