The meltdown taking place in the Borg-like collective known as the modern American left continues to push the envelope of absurdity. In a rather ridiculous post published Monday at Vanity Fair, Peter Savodnik claims that Trump’s historic win in November had something to do with angry white men falling in love with Vladimir Putin and apparently lusting after beautiful, submissive Russian women.
He wrote:
While Europe has embraced socialists and Muslims, among other groups, Russia appears a final redoubt of white pride. At least, this is how Russia has portrayed itself to, and is viewed by, many on the new American right—the angry horde, the white-nationalist base who wants their country back. There were glimmers of this in the ‘90s and the aughts, when angry, white men flew to Moscow, and then St. Petersburg and Kiev, and then Tomsk and Omsk and Vladivostok, in search of beautiful, Russian women to replace their feminist wives in America. (I wrote a story about these men, “From Russia with Pre-Nup,” for GQ.) What they loved about Russian women, I learned, was not just that they were gorgeous, but rather that they were submissive. They had their values straight. When these men talked about American women, they always sounded bitter. American women didn’t know how to please a man; they didn’t wear makeup; they didn’t cook; they let themselves go. These men came from Arkansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and the Central Valley of California, and they had fallen in love with Russia because it was full of pretty white girls who acted the way they thought girls should act.
Donald Trump’s choice of female partners reflects the yearnings and inclinations of these angry, white men—many of whom, one imagines, now comprise his base. Two of his three wives come from Slavic, ex-Communist countries. His shortest marriage was to an American.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Submissive? Is it just me or does that seem not only simplistic but sexist? I get the feeling Savodnik never heard of Liudmila Pavlichenko.
Who’s that, you might ask. Fair question.
Nicknamed “Lady Death,” Pavlichenko is recognized as the most deadly female sniper in modern military history, credited with 309 confirmed kills, 36 of which were German snipers.
The Business Insider noted:
Like many young people in the Soviet Union at that time, Pavlichenko participated in OSOAVIAKhIM, a paramilitary sporting organization which taught youths weapons skills and etiquette.
“When a neighbor’s boy boasted of his exploits at a shooting range,” said Pavlichenko according to the Smithsonian.
“I set out to show that a girl could do as well. So I practiced a lot.”
On June 22, 1941, Hitler broke ties with Joseph Stalin and German troops poured into the Soviet Union. Pavlichenko rushed to join the Soviet army and defend her homeland, but she was initially denied entry into the army due to gender.
“She looked like a model, with well-manicured nails, fashionable clothes, and hairstyle. Pavlichenko told the recruiter that she wanted to carry a rifle and fight. The man just laughed and asked her if she knew anything about rifles,” Soviet-Awards.com wrote of Pavlichenko’s effort to join the military.
The article further notes:
Eventually, the Red Army gave her an “audition” by giving her a rifle and showed her two Romanians downrange who were working with the Germans. She shot down the two soldiers with ease, and was then accepted into the Red Army’s 25th Chapayev Rifle Division.
She killed 187 Germans in her first 75 days in battle.
Submissive? Hardly.
Of course, that doesn’t mean ALL Russian women fit her mold and it would be silly to say so.
But it does go to show just how ridiculous Savodnik’s claim is.
Sadly, this is the same kind of “fake news” now being put forward as “thoughtful analysis” and we can expect to see much more of it.
Next thing you know, I’ll be called a Russian agent for recounting Pavlichenko’s exploits…
