US-flagged Oil Tanker Struck by Portuguese Cargo Ship

Accident? Intentional? Mechanical? Update: Captain Detained

A major Maritime disaster occurred when the US-flagged Stena Immaculate oil tanker was struck by the Portuguese container ship MV Solong as it was at anchor. Official data shows that the MV Solong did not change course or take evasive action as it rammed the Stena Immaculate. The Stena was carrying jet fuel, which spilled into the North Sea.

UPDATE: The Captain of the Solong turns out to be a Russian national, along with several members of his crew. One crew member is still missing and presumed dead. The vessel failed inspections previously. The captain is detained in the UK on suspicion of “manslaughter by gross negligence.” (Fox)

There are not many tankers that fly the US flag.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Was the Solong Captain taking a nap? Were all of his crew staring at a distraction? OR was this deliberate? When a car fails to stop before ramming into a crowd, there are three assumptions: the driver did it on purpose, a medical incident, or a mechanical malfunction. Which was this? The US-flagged
ship was motionless when it was struck by the cargo ship. The disaster is under investigation.

“At approximately 10 a.m. UTC/ 5 a.m. EST on March 10, 2025, while anchored off the North Sea coast near Hull, United Kingdom, the Crowley-managed tanker Stena Immaculate was struck by the container ship Solong.

“The Stena Immaculate sustained a ruptured cargo tank containing Jet-A1 fuel due to the allision. A fire occurred as a result of the allision, and fuel was reported released. The Stena Immaculate crew abandoned the vessel following multiple explosions onboard. All Crowley mariners are safe and fully accounted for.

“Crowley immediately initiated its emergency vessel response plan and is actively working with public agencies to contain the fire and secure the vessel.” gcaptain.com

This tanker was under contract to the US military and is one of 10 tankers in the US Tanker Security Program. It was supposed to be enroute to the US Navy’s Sealift Command.

There were approximately 32 people injured, and both crews had to abandon ship, with only one hospitalized. The Solong ship was reportedly carrying 15 containers of Sodium Cyanide, and was due in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (The Independent). Sodium Cyanide turns into a deadly gas when subjected to fire. Add jet fuel to it and you have a major disaster not counting the environmental effects.
