Navy service members who have been seeking a religious exemption from the Covid vaccination have endured months of disgusting living conditions…and not even allowed to leave the Navy in some cases. One lower court blocked the Navy from separating the sailors who sought religious exemption. The Supreme Court removed the injunctions and allowed the mandatory vaccination cases to proceed. But the various cases are being litigated across the US – and that means the sailors can’t even separate from the service. It’s a catch 22 that could affect these service members forever.
You Can’t Leave:
An article about the disgusting living conditions was published by Fox News on Wednesday. According to the article, many of the Navy service members were moved to “alternative housing” while their cases are litigated…and that “alternative housing” turns out to be berthing barges of Navy ships. And it is more than disgusting living conditions- it is unsanitary and could affect their health. All because they wanted to seek a religious exemption from a vaccination that is problematical for efficacy. SecDef Lloyd Austin, SecNav Carlos Del Toro should be ashamed of themselves, but of course, they’re not.
One sailor who is now part of the class action lawsuit said in a court-filed declaration that they “could not leave the area” after asking to be terminated from the military due to religious objections to the mandate and were moved to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier’s berthing barge, where the conditions are “deplorable.”
“Because I could not leave the area, I moved onto the berthing barge for the Eisenhower. The conditions on the barge are deplorable, much like the USS George Washington, which is anchored in the same shipyard. There is mold everywhere and the barge’s toilets back up and leak. The water leaks out of the base of the toilet and collects near my rack and out into the hall. On bad days, it goes into the berthings on the other side. The leaks seem to be sewage—it smells like sewage and looks like it too. See Exhibit C (water I’ve mopped up from under my rack).”
“There is some sort of worm thriving in the stagnant water in the toilet bowls and on the floor in the leaked water around the base of the toilets. Needless to say, I do not feel comfortable or safe in this environment and I have contacted mental health services multiple times,” continued the sailor.
Others are in similar situations. One sailor who is married told the outlet that his “promotion status” was downgraded upon seeking the religious exemption and he can’t leave either – he has no desire to stay in the US Navy anymore. All of the sailors involved have been refused separation due to the ongoing litigation, even one who has a new baby on the way at home. They are being treated as garbage because of their requrest for a religious exemption. The leadership in charge should beheld accountable.
Disgusting living conditions have long been unpleasant in barracks, and other areas. Mold, backed up toilets, peeling of leaded paint on windows, etc. Our military deserves better. Many of the facilities are old and haven’t been upgraded for years. Some are currently being revamped, some are being rebuilt, but placing personnel in crummy facilities because of their faith is outrageous.
