A U-Haul driver mounted the sidewalk in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn on Monday, striking several pedestrians. The suspect was taken into custody by NYPD at the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Initially, police thought this may be a terrorist incident, but then learned they had contacted the suspect previously in an “Emotionally Disturbed Person” incident from 2019. The investigation is on-going, and they have not ruled anything out, in spite of what is being shared on social media.
The Bomb Squad was deployed to check for explosives in the U-Haul truck. Eight people were struck, two of them are in critical condition, 2 are in serious condition, the others have minor injuries. One of the victims was an NYPD police officer. Police told reporters there were 7 scenes they have to investigate.
The incident coincided with the start of the trial of a suspected terrorist/Islamic extremist named Sayfullo Saipov. That trial is in the death penalty phase. Saipov killed 7 people by ramming into them with a truck in 2017. That coincidence is why the NYPD first thought it was a possible terrorist incident.

Pictures from the incident, including a short video in the above tweet, show the U-Haul driver going onto the sidewalk and striking some pedestrians with a police car hot on his tail. Police stated that this was an intentional act. He then fled the scene and NYPD stopped the U-Haul driver near the entrance to the tunnel. His name has not been released as of this writing.
