Two Police Officers Killed in Westerville, Ohio Ambush

Two police officers in the Columbus suburb of Westerville, Ohio were killed Saturday after responding to a 911 hang-up call on Cross Wind Drive. According to local media, the officers were fired upon immediately as they arrived. One officer was killed on scene, the other was transported to Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victims were identified as Officer Anthony Morelli, 39, who was taken to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries there, and Officer Eric Joering, 54, who died at the scene.

The suspect was also shot, and transported to an area hospital. The suspect’s name has not been released. Columbus police will conduct the investigation.

“These were two of the best we had.” Joe Morbitzer, Police Chief of Westerville Provincial Police.

He was visibly emotional during the news conference. Joering was a 17 year veteran of the force, and Morelli was a 34 year veteran.
