Zion, Illinois – Two suburban Chicago men were arrested on Wednesday for giving aid and support to ISIS. Edward Schimenti, and Joseph Jones were arrested at 5:00 a.m. after a 19 month investigation by the FBI.
Police smashed open the door to their residence on Wednesday morning with a loud “boom” that woke up the neighbors. They also searched the home of Joseph Jones.
Schimenti, also known as Abdul Wali, bragged about watching ISIS films, and even had an ISIS flag on his phone. He was videoed saying that he wanted to see “the ISIS flag on the White House.” He also previously participated in a Black Live Matter protest.
“I want to see blood flowing, whatever way.” Edward Schimenti
Schimenti assumed the feds were watching him, but he went ahead and recruited Joseph Jones, aka Yusuf Abdulhaqq, to join ISIS with him.
He provided a collection of cell phones he hoped would be used for detonating bombs that would “kill 20 people each.”
Black Lives Matter Connection
At a Black Lives Matter protest against the police shooting of Justus Howell in 2015, Schimenti got hold of the bullhorn.
“He said he wanted to blow up the police department in retaliation. We had to take the bullhorn away from him.” Clyde McLemore, chair of the Lake County chapter of Black Lives Matter
Schimenti’s mother claimed that he was “nicer” to her and her husband after his conversion to Islam. That statement alone sheds some light on this man’s mentality…and the naivete of his mother.
The pair would ultimately be fooled by at least four feds working undercover — two adopting the same online persona — as well as a fifth person cooperating with law enforcement. The feds allegedly led Jones and Schimenti to believe they had gained access to an ISIS network designed to smuggle new recruits into Syria.
The men helped the cooperator obtain cellphones meant to be used as detonators, introduced him to an undercover fed they believed could get him overseas, and then drove the cooperator to O’Hare Airport to begin his journey on Friday. Once he left, the pair planned to deliver more cellphones via the cooperator’s “aunt.”
During the investigation, Jones allegedly shared gruesome Islamic State videos — depicting the deaths of people who were beheaded by a child soldier, drowned in a cage, and blown up by a rocket-propelled grenade while locked inside a vehicle. Another video demonstrated various ways to stab someone. It was titled “Some of the Deadly Stabbing Ways: Do not Forget to Poison the Knife.”
Both 35 year old men are in Federal Custody- their detention hearing was set for today. The charges are punishable by up to 20 years in Federal prison. The complaint was 77 pages long.
“According to a complaint and affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, Jones and Schimenti, both U.S. citizens, pledged their allegiance to ISIS and advocated on social media for violent extremism in support of the terrorist group.” US Justice Department
