Trump Backs Bump Stock Ban – The Slippery Slope
After ‘bump stocks’ came into the news a year ago with the murders of 58 people in Las Vegas, even the President has been in favor of a bump stock ban. Reuters reported that he is just a couple of weeks out on forming a new regulation that will effectively “knock out” the accessory. But it’s a slippery slope.
“We’re knocking out bump stocks. We’re in the final two or three weeks, and I’ll be able to write out bump stocks.” President Trump
Bump stocks or “slide fire” stocks are a novelty accessory. Getting rid of them is just another step toward gun bans.
“Bump stocks are an amusement, because they don’t under normal circumstances turn an AR-15 or another rifle into a killing machine, because you can’t hit anything with it. Only when you are presented 400 yards away with a field of uninterrupted humanity would something like that even be effective.” Paul Valone, Grass Roots, North Carolina
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
So the bump stock is not particularly popular. But as with other laws on gun control, gun control advocates begin with one part, and gradually advance to more and more little things that add up to bigger gun control.
If they can’t get a weapons ban, they start chipping away at accessories like the bump stock. It graduates to regulating bullets, as in California requiring a non-existent technology for marking shell casings (microstamping). They ban magazines that shoot a certain amount of rounds. They regulate the grip on a rifle. Pretty soon it becomes a snarl of paperwork to even buy bullets. And liberal, anti-gun courts will back them up.
Gun control starts small and works its way up.
“This is a very unusual situation in many ways, because the bump-stock, this is the first time anybody has ever heard of it being used this way, so to say [banning the device] will solve our crime problems is a bit much…I’m not interested in the details about, ‘Oh, this is a particularly vulnerable point and we ought to address it’; no, what they are looking for is any way they can get momentum.” Larry Pratt, Gun Owners of America, October 4, 2017 in the CS Monitor
We’re not giving our President an A+ for this stand. When you give an inch on gun control, the anti-gunners take a mile.
