Our “neighbor to the North” had a mass shooting in Nova Scotia that we previously reported, and on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an edict: all “military style” weapons are now banned in Canada. Because it’s a Parliamentary system, he can do that without going through a legislative body, it can be through an “in council” method.
“These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only — only to kill the largest amount of people in the shortest amount of time…You don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer.” Justin Trudeau
Although he acknowledged that most citizens who owned guns were “law abiding,” he still enacted the new rule. Hunting is not the point and never has been, but Canadians don’t have the history that we have in the United States. Trudeau’s edict gives every semi-automatic gun owner two years to turn in their weapons or face severe penalties. There are 1500 makes of weapons on the list to be banned. Included in it are the M16, M4, AR-10, and AR-15. Note here: M16s and M4s can be fully automatic – they are military rifles. The AR-10 and Ar-15 are semi-automatic, firing only one round at a time. The list does not seem to make a distinction, just lumping them all together as “military style assault weapons.” According to The Hill, there are 83,572 such weapons in Canada.

“Starting today, licensed gun owners will no longer be allowed to sell, transport, import or use these sorts of weapons in this country…
…Trudeau said there will be a two-year amnesty period to allow people who already own these firearms to comply with the ban. Trudeau promised to pass legislation in the coming months to provide “fair compensation” to people who own these firearms.
The Liberal Party promised some sort of buyback program in the last election, something that could cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars…
The ban will be enacted through regulations approved by an order-in-council from cabinet — not through legislation. Trudeau said the government was ready to enact this campaign promise months ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the legislative agenda.”
In the spirit of true gun grabbers, Canada’s left wing government has finally managed to do what it has always wanted to do, but didn’t have the excuse they have now. Even licensed gun owners are banned. Will they comply?
The Nova Scotia shooting rampage by Gabriel Wortman left 23 dead across six crime scenes. It was Canada’s worst mass killing. We can understand why people are upset, but banning an entire nation from the world’s most popular rifles over the evil actions of one man, is an emotional reaction, not a rational one. Not all of Wortman’s victims were shot – many were burned in their homes, and one of the guns he used belonged to the RCMP Constable he killed (New York Post).
