The term “transgender” always brings to mind the song, “The Great Pretender” by “The Platters”, one of the most successful rock groups of the mid-to-late 1950s. The Great Pretender tells the story of a man pretending to be doing well after being abandoned by his girlfriend and/or wife. (Click the link above to listen,)
A current version of the song might tell a slightly different story-
Yes, I’m the great pretender
Pretending that I’m now a girl
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
My need is such I pretend too much
I’m a guy but no one can tell
The Great Pretender is an entirely applicable label because the only thing a transgender person can do is pretend. In fact, when a transgender male or female states, “I identify as (other than birth gender)” he or she is in fact making a de facto statement of pretense.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of “identify” is, “to perceive or state the identity of (someone or something)”. Consequently, when a male states, “I identify as a female”, he is saying, “I perceive I’m a female”, or, “I am stating I am a female”. Completely absent is the statement, “I am a female”, which is what a true female would say.
There are countless reasons that a person would pretend to be something they are not. On some occasions, a pretender is attempting to deceive, on others, a pretense could be a setup for a surprise celebration. That is to say, the reason a person pretends can’t be universally classified as either good or bad.
Why a person would pretend to be of a gender other than the one of his or her birth is difficult for many people (myself included) to understand. In that regard, it’s none of my business and consequently, it’s not my concern. I don’t need to understand, and I’m not willing to embrace lifestyles and values with which I don’t agree. What I need, is to not have transgender activists attempting to impose their ideas and values on me.
Yet, the mantra of wokeness warriors includes demands to accept and embrace woke lifestyles and values. It should be no surprise that these demands do little more than fuel resentment, ridicule and rejection- the very things activists claim they’re trying to eliminate.
A perfect example is the kerfuffle (not sure if that’s a gender neutral word, but I don’t care) that erupted at Twitter when Head of Trust and Safety, Ella Irwin, labeled tweets by Matt Walsh of The Daily Wire as being in violation of Twitter’s “hateful conduct” policies. Walsh’s violation? “Misgendering”, (whatever that is) in his tweets which referenced the video, “What is a Woman”. Apparently, in the woke universe, defining a woman as a woman is hateful.
A basic tenet of the founding documents of this country is that every person has the freedom to think and believe as they wish and the right to express those beliefs. However, nowhere in the founding documents is there a right to impose one person’s beliefs on another. Consequently, people who identify as transgender have a right to believe as they wish. What they don’t have is a right to force others to share their beliefs or to impose them on others.
Yet that concept is not merely foreign to current liberal ideology, it’s rejected; the preachers of tolerance have proven time and again to be intolerant. In this instance, belief that a person who was born a male is actually a female is tolerated; a belief that birth gender cannot be changed is not. Personally, I believe that gender is established by the body parts with which you were born. Even if a person has some of those body parts removed, DNA will conclusively reaffirm actual gender.
Any claims to the contrary are just pretend.
