Declaring that the United States has “perpetuated a false sense of security with gun-free zones” for more than 20 years, the Second Amendment Foundation has launched an effort to abolish such places in the interest of public safety.
“It’s time to end this dangerous folly,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb in a news release. “Nobody wants to be a sitting duck in a maniac’s shooting gallery.”
The campaign was launched Monday, and already it is getting traction with online firearms publications. Gottlieb has been interviewed on local radio and an advertisement is slated to appear in print and online publications.
The campaign has a single, simple message: “You’re a sitting duck in a gun-free zone.” Artwork for the campaign was produced by Joe Tartaro, the veteran executive editor of TheGunMag.com, who recently announced his retirement.
Gottlieb cited research done by the Crime Prevention Research Center that revealed 98 percent of mass public shootings since 1950 have occurred in so-called “gun-free zones.” The problem is that criminals, terrorists and crazy people have ignored such designations and committed mayhem. The list of such places includes movie theaters, shopping malls, public parks, public schools and universities.
“Whether you’re talking about a high school in Florida, a theater in Colorado or a mall in Nebraska,” Gottlieb observed, “the common denominator has been that they all prohibited firearms on the premises. Of course, in every case, that ban had zero effect on the shooters who took innocent lives. There are numerous other examples where the gun-free mindset has been worse than a failure, and history has provided us the grim casualty counts to prove it.”
Over the years, critics of “gun-free zones” have done everything from personal boycotts to willfully ignoring such signs, rather than be caught defenseless in an emergency situation.
Major companies that have “no-guns” policies have been identified occasionally on social media.
