The Time Trump Embarrassed New York City Democrats
Make no mistake about it. Donald Trump can get things done. I remember living in the NYC Metro area back in 1986, when after spending a ton of money and a lot of time trying to repair the Wollman arena, the city announced that the rink would be closed for at least another 18 months with a high budget.
Donald Trump was incensed and wrote a letter to Mayor Ed Koch, claiming he could have the rink repaired and operational in just four months and well under budget. The democratic hierarchy scoffed at him and finally decided to call his bluff.
Donald Trump never bluffs. His ego wouldn’t allow it. In repairing the rink, Trump faced some major obstacles.
Work on the rink had been ongoing for nearly 12 years. In trying to save money, the city insisted on using delicate pipes through which Freon would flow in order to freeze the water covering with ice. The entire design was a train wreck from the word go.
The contractor had left the pipes exposed for 13 months and water flooded in. That meant that the water would need to be pumped out and the pipes needed repair from the many leaks, some of which were never found.
