A red house in north Portland became an “Antifa autonomous zone” over an eviction notice to the Kinney family that has lived there for 65 years. But Antifa moved in and created an “autonomous zone” or (“eviction blockade”) under the guise of protesting the eviction notice from September. When police moved in at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday to clear out the people, they were met with resistance as militants flooded back to the area for reinforcements later in the day.
TMZ reported,
Portland demonstrators have made the Red House the focal point of their larger message and their efforts have helped theĀ GoFundMeĀ accrue over $100k to fight the eviction — but the problem is … cops say there have been more than 80 calls about the property in the past 3 months.
These calls include reports of fights, shots fired, burglary, thefts, vandalism, trespassing, threats and illegally blocking traffic … and clearly, the City and law enforcement want it to stop.
Police raided the red house property, which is what caused the militants to call for reinforcements.
The Kinney family’s red house
After losing a federal lawsuit in the District Court of Oregon last year, the family appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court, which denied their petition. Last month, the family filed a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court, a formal request for the court to review the lower courtās decision.
A Multnomah County Judge authorized the Kinney family eviction in September. Since then, activists have worked to put up a ā24/7 eviction blockadeā around the home, which has come to be known as the āRed House on Mississippi.ā

Regardless of the excuse to āprotest,ā Antifa decided to block streets and create the same issue as āCHAZā in Seattle earlier in the year.

Even though militant āleadershipā invited journalists to visit their āzoneā at the red house, one Portland reporter,Ā @GenevieveReaumeĀ from KATU, was attacked, her cell phone smashed and her hand bloodied.

Police were initially pushed back and had to retreat on Tuesday.

Police raided the zone after Mayor Ted Wheeler authorized them to clear it out, and made several arrests. They found numerous weapons and piles of rocks that were gathered to throw at police. ActivistsĀ claimedĀ that police were āviolent and injured one of the people inside the house.ā Though the pandemic brought a āmoratoriumā on evictions, this situation occurred prior to that moratorium, and therefore did not apply.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler advised Antifa that the encampment should end, and authorized the police to clear it.
āI am authorizing the Portland Police to use all lawful means to end the illegal occupation on North Mississippi Avenue and to hold those violating our communityās laws accountable. There will be no autonomous zone in Portland⦠Itās time for the encampment and occupation to end. There are many ways to protest and work toward needed reform. Illegally occupying private property, openly carrying weapons, threatening and intimidating people are not among them.ā Mayor Ted Wheeler onĀ Twitter
At least 81 calls were received for incidents at the red house zone, everything from shots fired to vandalism. What was a legitimate issue of eviction of a family has become a nightmare for Portland.

Those arrested were released, per the policy of the Multnomah County DA. But is the red house controversy over? Doesnāt look like it.
Our goal is for this to resolve peacefully to increase safety for all involved. I encourage those involved to reach out to our demonstration liaisons so we can discuss a peaceful outcome.
