The Democrat Assault Weapons Excise Tax – 1000% Increase on Guns (HR 8051)

Back in June, Rep Don Beyer (D-VA) introduced the Assault Weapons Excise Tax (HR 8051) as a backdoor gun control bill. If enacted, it would raise the taxes on gun purchases far above what ordinary people can afford. If you have your eye on a semi-auto firearm that costs $1,000 now, it would cost $10,000 if this bill passes. The bill currently has 36 co-sponsors, all Democrats. It covers ALL semi-automatic weapons both rifles and pistols. It also has been listed as “reconciliation-ready,” which means it could be enacted with a simple majority vote.

Rep. Don Beyer today introduced the Assault Weapons Excise Act, legislation that would impose a 1000 percent excise tax on the manufacture, production, or importation of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. The bill contains an exemption for federal, state, and local government entities, so the armed services and law enforcement would be unaffected. As a revenue measure, the bill is designed to be included in budget reconciliation legislation and withstand challenges under the Byrd Rule, creating a pathway to pass a new restriction on assault weapons with a simple majority in the Senate. Beyer serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, which has sole jurisdiction over taxation.

Rep Don Beyer

Beyer, like all Democrats, uses the 1994 Assault Weapons ban to fuel their arguments. But the bill was largely ineffective for stopping violence nationwide, which was shown by the statistics.

Mr. Beyer apparently pays no attention to what’s been happening in other than a political haze from the media. In October of 2021, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled unanimously against Cook County’s taxes on guns and ammunition. The ruling stated that the taxes were not “uniform” as required by the State Constitution, and the monies from them did not go to any violence prevention programs. Beyer’s bill is the same, and has no provision for any violence prevention recipients.

The Assault Weapons Excise Tax is a glaring attack on gun rights: the bill specifically exempts all Federal, State, and Local governments from paying the tax. That instantly makes it not “uniform.” It also reminds us of why we have the 2nd Amendment in the first place – governments that are armed against the civilian population can become dangerous, our own included.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Lies and disinformation

Restricting the 2nd amendment by pricing firearms out of the perview of the general public would be completely unconstitutional. On top of that, if firearms are restricted in such a manner, another fund set up to help conservation efforts for wildlife would be seriously affected; the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act is funded by the sale of sporting goods such as firearms and ammunition.

Speaking of disinformation…the Republican counter to the Assault Weapons Excise Tax is called the “Return Act.” that plan simply re-routes the funding of the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Act to the energy sector. If firearms can no longer fund the conservation because no one can afford a gun, then at least they will still be funded. But to search this online you will find a sheer wave of groups who have not bothered to research this point and are shrieking that the Republicans are defunding wildlife. Not true – it’s hype pushed by media and Democrats.

Beyer and his Democrat buddies have no concept of how many guns are in the United States right now. They have no concept of law-abiding gun owners. They operate on an egregious emotional argument that holds no water when confronted by the truth. The Assault Weapons Excise Tax is unlikely to pass…but these days you never know how things will shake out.
