Brownsville: USA Today reported that Patrick Shields, a Tennessee Army veteran, is being credited with saving many lives after disarming a 16 year old male who opened fire after a Homecoming Game on Friday night.
Patrick Shields spent 22 years in the Army, through 3 deployments. He currently serves in the National Guard. He’s well trained in disarming the bad guys…he just didn’t expect to have to do it at his son Taylor’s football game.
As he and his brother were cleaning up their tailgating area, he heard a disturbance.
“My brother and I were cleaning up, and we heard a bunch of kids hollering and yelling across the street at Walgreen’s, but we didn’t know what was going on. Then we heard sounds like fireworks … like pow pow pow…And I looked over there and saw the flame coming out of a pistol, and a bunch of the kids were running toward us.”
He stated that the shooter wasn’t shooting in his direction but the kids were running toward him.
“It looked like he was aiming for one person, but I don’t know who. They were all running toward us, but he wasn’t shooting in our direction.”
Patrick immediately headed in the direction of the shooter, while running over in his mind exactly what he was going to do when he got there. When he got within arm’s length, he did what he was trained to do: stop the bad guy.
“I grabbed him by the arm that was holding the gun and pulled him toward me and threw him up against the fence. Then I grabbed him by the back of the shirt and got him on the ground.”
Brownsville assistant police Chief Kelvin Evans was already running toward the scene, and arrived to put handcuffs on the suspect.
The Brownsville police Chief Barry Diebold commended Shield’s actions: “Mr. Shields’ quick thinking saved many lives.”
Blue Lives Matter reported that two people were shot, one hit twice in the back and one in the foot. Both were released from the hospital. The suspect is in a Juvenile Detention center. He is charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
There are people who run away from danger, and people who toward it. The Brownsville community today is thankful that Patrick Shields was one who ran toward it.
